Sumitomo Forestry Rolls Out the Energy-Saving Housing Club
On July 1st, Sumitomo Forestry Co., Ltd. officially unveiled the
Energy-Saving Housing Club, designed specifically for homeowners of their properties. This groundbreaking initiative aims to create J-Credits from the CO2 reductions achieved by the residents living in these energy-efficient homes.
Sumitomo Forestry has long been at the forefront of sustainability, with its houses exhibiting exceptional energy efficiency compared to standard residential buildings. The new club perceives occupants' residence as active participation in CO2 reduction efforts and converts the equivalent environmental benefits into carbon credits under the J-Credit system. Once generated, these credits will be sold on behalf of Sumitomo Forestry, with the profits being distributed annually to homeowners based on the amount of CO2 they helped reduce.
This initiative marks a first within the housing industry, representing a commitment not just to reducing CO2 emissions during construction but also to minimizing
operational carbon emissions through the provision of energy-efficient and renewable energy-utilizing homes.
Objective and Mechanism
Sumitomo Forestry expresses its commitment to energy efficiency through its built-to-order and prefabricated houses, all of which undergo assessment based on the
Building-Housing Energy-efficiency Labeling System (BELS). The CO2 reduction amounts are calculated using a comparison between the certified BELS properties and typical residential standards. The company's club secretariat will consolidate these reduction achievements from various homeowners to aggregate their contribution towards generating credits efficiently.
Once certified, Sumitomo Forestry will manage the sale of these credits and distribute the proceeds back to homeowners in the form of points or benefits tailored specifically for them. This comprehensive approach aims to visualize the CO2 reduction and solidify the relationship between homeowners and their contributions to the environment.
How It Works
- - Eligibility: Only individual homeowners meeting specific criteria are eligible. Requirements include having built a BELS-rated house or purchasing a prefabricated one, living in the residence within two years of joining the club, and not benefiting from prior environmental subsidies related to carbon credits.
- - Annual Distribution: Profits from the sale of carbon credits will be equitably distributed among club members based on their contributions to CO2 reductions.
Underlying Commitment to Sustainability
Sumitomo Forestry's efforts extend beyond simply building homes; they are encompassing a broader environmental mandate that addresses both the embedding carbon generated during the construction process and the ongoing operational impacts when homeowners occupy properties. By visualizing CO2 reduction achievements through this club, Sumitomo Forestry is not only promoting an eco-conscious lifestyle among homeowners but also bolstering the larger goal of a decarbonized society.
By bringing awareness to their carbon footprint, homeowners can engage more deeply with environmental issues, enhancing their understanding and commitment to climate change initiatives. The aim is to foster continuous communication between Sumitomo Forestry and its clients, ensuring satisfaction and long-term relationships.
