In an important development for the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago, Dorri McWhorter has announced her resignation as President and Chief Executive Officer, effective February 28, 2025. Her tenure, which began in 2021, has been characterized by a commitment to redefining the YMCA's role in the community, shifting from a membership-centric organization to a multi-service hub aimed at addressing broader social needs.

McWhorter expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve, stating, "It has been an absolute privilege to serve as the President and CEO of the YMCA Metropolitan of Chicago. After three and a half years as CEO, I believe now is the right time to pass the baton to the next leader who will continue advancing the transformation of the Y."

Impactful Leadership Amidst Challenges



Taking the reins during a challenging time, McWhorter's leadership focused on initiating a pivotal transformation plan intended to bolster the YMCA’s long-term impact on the communities it serves. Under her guidance, the organization adopted a community hub model that expanded its offerings beyond traditional programs into critical areas such as chronic disease prevention, mental health services, food security, and job training.

"Dorri stepped into her role during a challenging time and, in collaboration with the leadership team, helped advance the Y's transformation efforts," remarked Steve Sorenson, Chair of the Board of Managers.

Notably, the YMCA played a vital role in securing the prestigious Chicago Prize from the Pritzker Traubert Foundation in 2023, a testament to its growth and community impact. This award is set to support the development of the Sankofa Wellness Village and its inclusion of the West Garfield Park YMCA, slated to open in 2026.

The Path Ahead



Following McWhorter's departure, Sheila Nelson has been appointed as the Interim CEO. Nelson, a seasoned business executive with extensive experience in strategic planning and revenue growth, is expected to facilitate a seamless transition while guiding the organization through this period of change. She has been part of the YMCA's Board of Managers since 2020 and brings a strong background from her previous leadership roles at UnitedHealth Group.

"Sheila's extensive business expertise and dedication to the Y make her the ideal choice to guide the organization during this transition," said Sorenson.

As the YMCA seeks to find McWhortr’s successor, the organization plans to leverage its existing strengths, particularly its strong demand for early education and afterschool programs. The camps and various initiatives within the YMCA are also positioned for expansion, ensuring that the organization continues to meet the needs of its community.

The national search for a new President and CEO will commence in February 2025, with a specialized executive search firm to assist in this vital process.
