Hanon Systems Surpasses Production Milestone
Hanon Systems, a renowned name in the global automotive thermal management arena and a subsidiary of Hankook & Company, has achieved a remarkable feat by producing over one million eco-friendly electric compressors (eCompressors) that utilize R744, commonly known as CO2, as the refrigerant. This significant achievement comes just one and a half years after the company reached the production of 500,000 units in January 2024, showcasing its competitive edge and growth within the electric compressor market.
The production of R744 eCompressors occurs at Hanon Systems' state-of-the-art facility located in Palmela, Portugal. This site notably provides key components for the Volkswagen Group's MEB (Modular Electric Drive Matrix) platform, which is exclusively aimed at electric vehicles (EVs). With the rising demand for eco-friendly solutions in the automotive industry, especially in Europe, the adoption of R744 compressors has seen substantial growth. The unveiling of new electric vehicle models by some major automakers at key industry events like the IAA Mobility this month has further solidified optimistic projections for the electric vehicle market's future.
One of the standout features of the R744 refrigerant is its low global warming potential (GWP) of just 1, which makes it a leading eco-friendly alternative when compared to traditional refrigerants. Within electric vehicle heat pump systems, the electric compressor is vital, driving the refrigerant cycle and thus optimizing both cabin comfort and overall vehicle performance. By utilizing the R744 electric compressor, Hanon Systems not only minimizes the environmental footprint associated with electric vehicles but also addresses the challenges posed by reduced driving range in colder climates. Moreover, it supports global efforts aimed at increasing electric vehicle adoption by complying with stringent environmental regulations.
Hanon Systems is no stranger to the development of thermal management solutions adaptable to a range of refrigerants, boasting decades of industry experience. The company pioneered the design and production of an eCompressor that operates using R744 for automotive climate control systems, positioning itself as a leader in eco-friendly technology. Additionally, it offers a diverse array of next-generation, environmentally friendly refrigerant solutions, including R290 (propane), as well as traditional options like R134a and R1234yf. This extensive product lineup allows Hanon Systems to continue meeting the world's ever-evolving needs efficiently.
"Hanon Systems remains committed to fostering innovation in automotive thermal management solutions," stated Soo-il Lee, Vice Chairman and CEO of Hanon Systems. "The milestone of surpassing one million units in R744 electric compressor production is not just a statistic; it symbolizes our leadership in eco-friendly technology and reflects our dedication to a sustainable future. Being part of the Hankook & Company Group amplifies our innovative potential, making achievements like this possible."
The Palmela plant, where this transformative production was realized, has a storied history, commencing the production of mechanical compressors in 1988 and launching its first electric compressor in 2009. The plant's strategic location, roughly 25 kilometers south of Lisbon, enhances logistics efficiency and allows it to integrate seamlessly into the European value chain.
