St. Petersburg College Launches New AI Certificates to Meet Workforce Demands

St. Petersburg College Introduces New AI Certificate Programs

In today's tech-driven world, the demand for expertise in artificial intelligence (AI) is on the rise. Recognizing this pressing need, St. Petersburg College (SPC) has officially launched two new AI certificate programs, designed to equip students with the crucial skills required in careers related to AI applications, machine learning, and data science.

Preparing Students for a Digital Future

The landscape of employment is rapidly changing as AI technologies infiltrate various sectors, making it necessary for educational institutions to adapt their curriculums accordingly. SPC's latest offerings come at a time when industries are actively seeking professionals proficient in AI capabilities. According to Jimmy Chang, Interim Dean of the College of Computer and Information Technology, these programs serve as an excellent primer for anyone interested in understanding the implications of AI in both immediate and broader socioeconomic contexts. He asserts, "For anyone curious about Artificial Intelligence and its role and influence, this is a great starting point. We're providing a comprehensive overview of AI's applications, promoting greater awareness and comfort with this evolving technology."

Two Distinct Programs

The two newly launched certificate programs cater to varying levels of expertise and interest:
1. Artificial Intelligence Responsible Use Certificate - This 9-credit program delves into the theoretical frameworks and practical applications of AI technologies, emphasizing ethical and responsible usage. Students will explore how AI is transforming industries and revolutionizing business functions.
2. Artificial Intelligence Responsible Use Practitioner Certificate - A more intensive 18-credit program, this certification focuses on practical skills in machine learning, natural language processing, computer vision, and data analysis. Students here will also complete two programming courses that align with SPC's Data Science Associate in Science degree, enhancing their academic portfolio.

Dawn Ellis, an SPC faculty member involved in course design, expressed the significance of these programs by noting, "More and more of our graduates are being asked to incorporate AI into their positions. You can't really look anywhere without seeing an AI-driven tool in business."

Global Impact of AI Technologies

The impact of AI is noticeable across various domains including software development, robotics, health care, finance, transportation, and even social media. From smart assistants that manage tasks to self-driving cars and data-driven decision-making in businesses, AI has permeated everyday life. SPC's programs aim to prepare students for such roles, ensuring that they are well-equipped to contribute to this technological evolution.
