Honey Harvest Experience at the Nature Coexistence Site
On October 4, 2025, at the Nature Coexistence Site (OECM certified area) in Yokomakura, Aichi Town, Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture, the NPO Karatsu Farm & Food conducted a honey harvesting event alongside local residents and high school students. This initiative, part of the 'Karatsu Bee Project', aims to foster a 'Nature Positive' community through learning and interaction while preserving the local satoyama environment.
The event brought together Yokomakura residents, Mr. Yoshida from Kashima City, students from Karatsu Minami High School, and local junior high school students. Participants of various ages collaborated to learn about the ecology of honeybees and the significance of coexistence with nature. This undertaking not only educated the youth but also bridged generations within the community.
Unique Honey from Native Bees
The honey harvested this day was a special blend produced by native Japanese honeybees, gathered from a variety of wildflowers blooming in the area's satoyama. It is characterized by a light pink rose-like fragrance, gentle sweetness, and a subtle acidity that makes it distinct. This year’s honey was again reminiscent of the delightful flavors from the previous year, allowing all participants to savor the natural bounty.
Cultivating Sunflowers for Honey Production
This year, sunflowers have also been cultivated as a summer nectar source. By observing the flowering periods and the impacts of climate change, the community is working towards creating a cyclical ecosystem that utilizes local resources. Karatsu Farm & Food believes that such small efforts cumulatively contribute toward realizing a 'Nature Positive' society, and they continue their sustainable practices.
New Rice from the Nature Coexistence Site
In addition to honey, the Yokomakura Nature Coexistence Site has also started harvesting and selling 'Nature Coexistence Site Rice', marking a significant achievement. This area, recognized as the first Nature Coexistence Site in Saga Prefecture, has regenerated 5.8 hectares of paddies that were to be abandoned. The rice grown in this integrated environment, where paddies, water channels, and forests harmoniously coexist, boasts rich flavor and high nutritional value. Cultivated in a manner that respects the environment, this rice not only delights the palate but also is gentle on the earth. You can enjoy the aroma of new rice and the blessings of the satoyama!
Future Perspectives
Karatsu Farm & Food aims to continue its efforts from the Yokomakura Nature Coexistence Site, collaborating with local residents, educational institutions, government bodies, and businesses to promote environmental education (ESD) and biodiversity conservation. Their goal is to create a model where people learn, work, and live while protecting the region's natural environment. They are determined to strengthen community ties for the inheritance of this philosophy to future generations, helping steer society toward a Nature Positive direction.
