Mynavi Partners Introduces Innovative Online Internship Program for Students with Disabilities
Mynavi Partners, based in Chiyoda, Tokyo, is leading the way by launching an online internship program specifically designed for university students, graduate students, and recent alumni who possess a disability certificate or are in the application process. This initiative, titled the "Career Create Program," features a paid internship lasting 12 months and marks a pioneering move among Japanese companies to conduct online internships for students with disabilities.
A New Era for Online Internships
The newly established online course aims to provide individual support tailored to each student's needs. Mynavi Partners will lend a personal computer to every student participating in the program. This setup allows them to engage in activities and training just like they would in an in-person internship. Mynavi Partners plans to accommodate approximately five students with disabilities starting in December 2025, with the intention of expanding the program further in the future. Through this innovative approach, Mynavi Partners is committed to offering meaningful learning and growth opportunities to students with disabilities all over Japan.
Enhancing Support for Students with Disabilities
Although there are a few internship programs for students with disabilities in Japan, many challenges remain, especially regarding the establishment of support systems tailored to each individual’s needs. Historically, such internships were primarily conducted in-person at offices in Tokyo. Now, the online format ensures that geography does not hinder students' access to vital workplace experiences. Mynavi Partners aims to provide comprehensive support systems, including consultations, follow-ups, and management of work activities.
The program aligns with Mynavi Partners' mission: "To open paths for everyone to thrive and serve as a guiding light for the future." With this forward-thinking initiative, the company hopes to enhance educational and career opportunities for many students with disabilities.
Addressing Employment Challenges
Despite the efforts made, the employment landscape for students with disabilities poses significant challenges. According to a survey by JASSO (Japan Student Services Organization), of the 8,571 students with disabilities graduating from universities and junior colleges in fiscal year 2024, only 4,951 have secured jobs, resulting in a job placement rate of just 57.8%. In contrast, the overall job placement rate for general graduates is a staggering 98.0%, highlighting a 40.2% gap.
The limited employment opportunities indicate a narrow reception toward hiring students with disabilities, which often leads to inadequate support for them once they are employed. Although the statutory employment rate is set to increase from the current 2.5% to 2.7% in July 2026, immediate improvements in the employment environment for students with disabilities are yet to be seen.
A Step Toward Inclusion
Recognizing these challenges, Mynavi Partners aims to provide students with disabilities an opportunity to expand their horizons irrespective of their living conditions. The newly established online course facilitates internships where each student receives a personal computer, enabling them to participate in group business process outsourcing (BPO) tasks, such as data entry and product introduction articles. During the internship, students receive compensation based on the hours worked, helping them appreciate the significance and responsibility of working while forming connections with society.
Furthermore, participants will engage in self-care skills training, including understanding their disabilities, identifying their characteristics, developing self-coping strategies, and consulting for accommodations. The program also includes around 80 workshops designed to build foundational professional skills and empower students to craft their career visions.
The Career Create Program: Detailed Overview
The Career Create Program is structured around the concept of gaining essential business skills and self-care competencies to confidently envision a successful career. This 12-month paid internship program welcomes undergraduate and graduate students, as well as recent graduates within two years. Initial in-person internships began in February 2024, allowing students to identify their strengths and preferences while also promoting job placement through the specialized recruitment service of Mynavi Partners, which focuses on students with disabilities.
While there are free employment transition support services primarily for professionals with disabilities, equivalent support systems for students are limited. Mynavi Partners is determined to bridge this gap and continue its efforts to promote social advancements for students with disabilities.
