Breaking the Age Barrier: Creating Multi-Generational Workplaces through HR Initiatives

On August 27, Trustyyle, a company headquartered in Chuo, Tokyo, will host an event titled "Breaking the Age Barrier: Creating Multi-Generational Workplaces." This event, organized through their community 'HR Library,' seeks to address the often-overlooked issue of ageism in the workplace.

Understanding Ageism

Ageism refers to biases and discrimination based on age. Unlike more visible forms of discrimination such as gender or race, ageism can often be more subtle and insidious. Phrases like "You're too young to understand" or "Older workers can’t learn new tricks" have become commonplace in workplace conversations. This not only creates division among employees but also stifles opportunities for collaboration and innovation across generations.

A 2021 report by the World Health Organization highlighted the severe impacts of ageism on individuals’ health, happiness, and economic participation, urging organizations to address this crucial issue. While many companies in Western nations are already tackling ageism as a structural bias parallel to gender and racial discrimination, Japan still lags in recognizing this social concern adequately.

Event Objectives

The upcoming event aims to deepen understanding of the nature of ageism and explore why it often goes unnoticed. Attendees will:
  • - Comprehend the essence of ageism: Gain insights into how deeply ingrained beliefs have perpetuated age-related biases that hinder workplace inclusivity.
  • - Redefine HR challenges: Evaluate their organizational practices using ageism in the context of diversity and inclusion (D&I).
  • - Visualize age bias: Identify and articulate the structural aspects of ageism within their organizations.
  • - Create a culture of inclusion: Foster an environment that prioritizes psychological safety and inclusivity, free from age-related stereotypes.
  • - Take actionable insights: Leave with practical strategies and actions that can be implemented within their organizations.
  • - Network: Engage and connect with like-minded HR professionals passionate about creating inclusive workplaces.
