Exploring New Horizons for Automated Insulin Delivery at EASD 2026 by SIBIONICS and PharmaSens

SIBIONICS and PharmaSens Unveil Innovative Diabetes Solutions at EASD 2026

At the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) 2026 conference, SiBionics presented their ambitious vision titled "See More, Act Earlier" to transform diabetes management through advanced technology. This initiative aligns continuous monitoring with future diabetes care, proposing a more integrated approach.

The showcase consisted of three main areas:
1. See More Beyond Glucose: This area focused on glucose, ketones, and combined monitoring solutions.
2. Act Earlier From Insight to Intervention: Here, the exploration of multimodal sensors and their role in insulin delivery was emphasized, aiding in timely decision-making and interventions.
3. Go Further Realizing the Unimagined: This segment looked towards broader applications of biosensor technology in health management.

The vision was further detailed at the SiBionics industry symposium titled "From Sensors to Integrated Care: Emerging Technologies Shaping the Future of Diabetes Management," chaired by Professor Mark Evans from the University of Cambridge and Dr. Guido Freckmann from the Institute for Diabetes Technology in Germany.

The symposium featured notable presentations, including Professor Karolina Kędzierska-Kapuza's discussion on continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) and its application for Type 3c diabetes treatment. Professor Wei Qiang elaborated on CGM accuracy and future concepts for multimodal sensor technology, while Professor Andrej Janež emphasized the importance of continuous ketone monitoring in the context of GLP-1 therapies.

Additionally, Professor Ahmad Haidar presented key findings from the SMART02 feasibility study, focusing on integrated glucose measurement and insulin delivery. This study evaluated an early prototype called "niia signature," which is developed collaboratively by PharmaSens and SiBionics since their partnership announcement in June 2025. The "niia signature" device aims to combine CGM, insulin delivery, and an automated glucose control (AGC) algorithm all in one portable patch device, streamlining the management process for diabetes patients.

A significant challenge addressed in the study was maintaining glucose measurement performance when insulin was administered close to the sensor. Instances of temporary disruptions post-bolus injections were noted, occurring primarily at doses of 10 units or more, with a recovery time of around 20 minutes for the sensor signal to stabilize. In conjunction with the patient trial, the prototype was tested alongside the AGC algorithm developed by Professor Ahmad Haidar. The collaboration between PharmaSens’s niia patch pump and SiBionics’s sensor demonstrated consistent performance throughout the study, marking a promising milestone in device development.

The exhibition and symposium effectively bridged clinical needs with advanced technology, as PharmaSens and SiBionics investigate how integration could facilitate more convenient and user-friendly automated insulin delivery devices in the future. However, further research is necessary to validate the performance and clinical utility of the device.

It is essential to note that the "niia signature" remains a medical product under testing and is not currently authorized for sale in any market.
