Embracing Lifelong Learning for People with Disabilities: A Conference in Kunitachi

Embracing Lifelong Learning for People with Disabilities

On January 31, 2026, Kunitachi will be the venue for the "Living Together Learners' Society Conference". This event, organized by the general incorporated association Sanayama, aims to facilitate discussions and knowledge sharing among stakeholders involved in supporting lifelong learning for individuals with disabilities. This initiative is part of a larger project commissioned by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) aimed at enhancing learning opportunities for people with disabilities after they graduate from school.

The call for promoting lifelong learning for individuals with disabilities has garnered attention as it addresses critical societal issues. Particularly for those with disabilities, there is a stark lack of opportunities to engage in community activities and achieve fulfilling lives after school. Therefore, stakeholders from various sectors—including social education and welfare—are being urged to collaborate in expanding accessible learning opportunities.

In recent years, themes centered on lifelong learning and coexistence have gained prominence. The “Recovery School @ Kunitachi (RGK)” program launched in 2023 has created a new platform for collaborative learning. However, the current landscape still reveals a significant gap in opportunities for individuals with disabilities to learn throughout their lives. This conference aims to gather those involved in creating learning spaces and share effective practices and insights concerning disability awareness under the social model of disability.

Conference Overview

The conference will be held at the Kunitachi Community Center from 13:00 to 17:30, followed by a networking session. Key stakeholders expected to attend include social education personnel, local government officials, welfare workers, and members of NGOs. With a capacity of 100 participants, prior registration is required, and there is no participation fee, though a nominal charge applies for the networking reception.

Attendees can look forward to engaging sessions such as the keynote speech by Professor Eiji Tsuda from Kobe University, titled "Why We Should Focus on Lifelong Learning for People with Disabilities." Panel discussions will dive into the richness and challenges of inclusive education, featuring dialogue among experts in the field.

Detailed Timeline:

  • - 13:00-13:20: Opening remarks and introduction to MEXT's initiatives.
  • - 13:20-13:50: Keynote Speech by Professor Eiji Tsuda.
  • - 13:50-14:55: Panel discussion on the challenges and benefits of learning together.
  • - 15:15-17:30: Breakout sessions focusing on various aspects of lifelong learning and inclusion.

At the end of the day, participants will have the opportunity to exchange ideas and network during an informal reception, enhancing connections among professionals dedicated to lifting the barriers for inclusive education.
