Culinary Innovation from South Ise Town
In an effort to revitalize local resources, Red Horse Corporation, headquartered in Sumida, Tokyo, has launched two exciting new products featuring the premium edible marine algae known as "Sugiao Nori." Cultivated through land-based aquaculture in South Ise Town, this high-quality ingredient was showcased to the public during the Minamiise Festival held on December 20.
Introducing Sugiao Nori
Sugiao Nori is recognized as the finest variety among blue algae due to its rich aroma and distinct texture. Its slender, fibrous consistency offers a satisfying bite, while its aromatic components provide a depth of flavor that enhances any dish. The algae are cultivated by Minami Ise Marine Bio, which uses subterranean seawater in a dedicated land-based facility established in April 2020. This partnership was born from Red Horse Corporation's desire to explore product development opportunities in collaboration with the local community.
Product Highlights
The newly developed items include:
- - Sugiao Nori Tsukudani (seaweed preserve)
- - Sugiao Nori Potato Chips
Both products boast the distinct lavender aroma and flavor of Sugiao Nori, making them approachable for a wide range of consumers.
Tsukudani
The Tsukudani is designed to retain the aromatic and fibrous texture of the algae, ensuring a hearty mouthfeel. As soon as you open the jar, the enticing scent wafts through the air, making it impossible to resist. It's perfect served over steaming rice or mixed into pasta dishes, enhancing every bite with its umami qualities.
Potato Chips
Developed in collaboration with Fukuoka's popular potato chip maker, Potato House, the chips are crafted to provide a delightful crunch. These thick-cut chips are generously seasoned with Sugiao Nori, producing a flavor profile that's both addictively salty and satisfying.
Successful Launch at the Festival
During the Minamiise Festival, which took place at the Shukudaso Wholesale Market, the new products garnered impressive feedback from visitors. Many attendees couldn’t resist sampling the Tsukudani and Potato Chips, expressing their delight with comments such as, "What an amazing aroma!" and "I can’t stop eating these!" The response was overwhelmingly positive, with numerous attendees purchasing multiple items and recommending them to friends and family.
Despite the cold, rainy weather, foot traffic at the booth exceeded expectations, resulting in a notable sell-out.
Future Availability
The Tsukudani will soon be available at local retailers, and specific stores near Ise Jingu shrine, while the Potato Chips will be offered in limited quantities during special events. If you’re interested in trying these regional delicacies, keep an eye out for them!
