Significant C-Suite Divide Revealed in Highspring's Business Preparedness Study

Major Findings from Highspring's C-Suite Study

In a landscape where businesses face unexpected disruptions, Highspring, a leading professional services provider, recently conducted a pivotal study titled Planning for the Unexpected. This research, which surveyed 1,137 high-level executives, reveals striking differences in how well-prepared businesses believe they are for unforeseen challenges.

Overview of the Findings

The study included perspectives from CEOs, CFOs, CIOs, and VP-level leaders across the United States and Canada. A particularly notable finding is that CFOs perceive nearly twice the exposure to potential disruptions compared to CEOs across ten key business functions. Among the executives surveyed, only 30% of CIOs expressed high confidence in their organization’s ability to manage major disruptions, significantly lower than the 52% of CEOs who felt similarly assured.

Bellwether trends emerged showing that while a staggering 92% of leaders reported confidence in handling unexpected business interruptions, merely 47% have corporate planning that actively considers these unforeseen events. This disparity indicates a serious disconnect between perception and reality within executive leadership teams.

Key Challenges and Opportunities

Brian Waller, CEO and Co-Founder of Highspring, emphasized the importance of understanding different leadership perspectives on industry dynamics. His statement underscores that diversity of thought must catalyze alignment on how organizations navigate potential upheaval. Waller pointed out:
"An aligned strategy begins with clear insights from leaders, which is essential for identifying opportunities and adapting as needed."

Additionally, the research highlights critical areas of concern among executives. Notably, talent-related issues were among the top challenges, with retention and reskilling strategies flagged as urgent matters to address. In fact, three out of the six primary challenges are people-related, indicating that personnel management is key to resilience in this ever-changing environment.

Operational difficulties also posed a significant barrier, with respondents identifying 21 distinct issues complicating daily operations. Approximately 52% of organizations are currently revamping their strategic plans, presenting a unique opportunity to integrate resilience and transformation efforts rather than treating them as isolated initiatives. This shift could streamline organizational responses to unexpected changes.

Actionable Insights for Leaders

Waller mentioned, “In an era characterized by rapid disruption, leaders must push forward critical operations while adapting to change.” He advocates for an actionable plan that can evolve with business conditions. Leaders are encouraged to not only recognize the potential for disruption but to actively engage with it to sculpt the organization’s future direction.
