China Southern Power Grid: Empowering Asia-Pacific Through Energy Connectivity

The Asia-Pacific region has emerged as a central hub for global economic growth, and the necessity for sustainable energy solutions has never been more apparent. At the heart of this energy transition is the China Southern Power Grid Co., Ltd. (CSG), a pioneer in promoting regional energy connectivity. On September 5, 2026, the Asia-Pacific Media Forum was inaugurated in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, providing a platform for leaders from over 40 countries to discuss strategies for collaborative energy development in the region.

Chairman Qian Chaoyang of CSG addressed the forum, emphasizing the critical role that clean, low-carbon energy sources play in sustaining the Asia-Pacific's economic engine. The region, known for its diverse energy resources, presents immense opportunities for cooperation and synergy among its member nations.

CSG has taken significant steps toward building an interconnected energy infrastructure across the region. Notably, the company has made advancements in six key areas:

1. Power Supply and Grid Reliability: The Greater Bay Area, where CSG operates, recorded electricity consumption exceeding 700 TWh, outperforming other global bay areas in reliability. CSG achieved an impressive power supply reliability rate with less than 30 minutes of outage time annually for each customer.

2. Clean Energy Integration: CSG has facilitated the transmission of approximately 180 billion kWh of clean electricity through its West-to-East Electricity Transmission initiative. Currently, clean energy constitutes over 50% of the total installed capacity in the region, driven by CSG's commitment to renewable energy development.

3. Technological Innovation: The company leads in innovative energy solutions, particularly in complex power grid operations and flexible ultra-high-voltage direct-current (UHVDC) technologies. CSG's proprietary AI framework, "Big Watt • Yudian," received top honors at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference, solidifying its status as a technology leader.

4. Collaborative Frameworks: CSG has initiated the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Power Enterprise Summit, which promotes cooperation among regional stakeholders. This forum aims to strengthen collaborative ties to optimize energy distribution and infrastructure.

5. Regional Cooperation Initiatives: The company has established 17 high-voltage power links connecting China with neighboring countries like Vietnam, Laos, and Myanmar, while making strides towards creating a unified regional electricity market in the Lancang-Mekong area. To date, over 84 TWh of electricity, predominantly from clean sources, has been exchanged across borders.

6. Capacity Building and Community Projects: With over 2,000 energy professionals trained through various programs and initiatives, CSG is committed to empowering local communities. Projects such as the Vinh Tan Light initiative in Vietnam and the Dok Champa project in Laos aim to enhance local energy capacity and resilience.

Looking forward, CSG is poised to leverage its experiences to foster further energy cooperation across the Asia-Pacific. By maximizing complementary energy resources among nations, CSG aims to ensure a sustainable and empowered future for the region.

The Asia-Pacific Media Forum garnered the attention of more than 400 representatives from governmental and international organizations, emphasizing a collective vision for energy cooperation and shared prosperity. As countries collaborate on energy issues, the work of entities like CSG will be pivotal in steering the region towards an energy-abundant future that aligns with global sustainability goals.

Through its unwavering commitment to energy connectivity and cooperation, China Southern Power Grid exemplifies how innovative approaches and regional collaboration can pave the way for a more sustainable and prosperous Asia-Pacific community.
