Seatrium and Karpowership Collaborate on Renewable Energy Integration Projects
Seatrium and Karpowership Sign Major Contract for Energy Solutions
Seatrium Limited, a prominent player in the maritime industry, has announced a significant partnership with Karpowership, a leader in floating power generation. This collaboration was solidified with a contract aimed at the major conversion and integration of Karpowership's next-generation Whale Class Powerships. This project signals a shared commitment from both companies to address the rising demand for reliable and sustainable energy solutions on a global scale.
Gone are the days of static power production models. Floating power plants have emerged as a revolutionary concept, allowing for flexible energy generation. Under the terms of this agreement, Seatrium will oversee the conversion of five Whale Class Powerships at its Tuas Boulevard Yard. These powerships are notable not just for their hydro-ready multipurpose generation systems but also for their ability to connect directly to national electricity grids through onboard substations.
Karpowership has designed these Whale Class vessels to generate up to 600 MW of immediate, grid-ready power—an impressive feat made possible through their optimized designs that ensure continuous fuel supply. What's more, the plug-and-play design ensures that these plants can start functioning and generating electricity within a remarkably short timeframe of just 30 days.
Engineering activities are already in progress, with an ambitious timeline that targets the first vessel's arrival at Seatrium's facilities by December 2027. Alvin Gan, Executive Vice President at Seatrium, stated, "This marks our first major conversion and integration project for Karpowership's Whale Class. We are very excited to contribute to Karpowership's innovative floating power solutions."
Karpowership’s Chief Technical Operations Officer, Gokhan Kocak, emphasized the transformational impact that the Whale Class Powerships can have on global energy generation. He noted, "The Whale Class not only reinforces our operational efficiency but also underlines our commitment to the principles of sustainability and security in energy production. Our long-standing partnership with Seatrium adds tremendous value to our endeavors."
This new contract comes after a Letter of Intent (LOI) was signed in August 2025 which outlined the potential conversion of Floating Storage Regasification Units (FSRUs) and the integration of new-generation powerships. Seatrium has already proven its capabilities by successfully completing several FSRU projects for Karpowership since their partnership began in 2018.
The stakes are high in today's energy market, and the importance of resilient infrastructure cannot be overstated. As both companies continue to deepen their collaboration, they aim to pioneer a new phase in energy infrastructure that enhances not just Singapore’s resiliency but also sets benchmarks globally.
In conclusion, this partnership between Seatrium and Karpowership is not merely a contractual agreement; it embodies a shared vision for the future of energy. By harnessing innovative maritime engineering and advanced power generation technologies, these companies are poised to make a lasting impact on how the world meets its electricity needs, cementing their roles as front-runners in the energy transition landscape.
