Kanematsu Invests in Alam Energy Indonesia for Decarbonization Project

Kanematsu's Investment in Alam Energy Indonesia

Kanematsu Corporation, alongside partners PT Alam Energy Indonesia (AEI), PT SOMA DAYA UTAMA (SOMA), and others, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to promote a comprehensive decarbonization project in Karimun Island, Indonesia. Announced as part of the cooperation between Japan and Indonesia during the fourth Ministerial Meeting of the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) held in Manila on October 8, 2026, this initiative aims to address the increasing energy demands in Indonesia while ensuring sustainable practices.

Background of the Project

Indonesia has been witnessing continual economic growth, which has led to a surge in energy demand. However, this situation poses a challenge: balancing energy needs with decarbonization efforts. This is particularly pressing in island regions, where there is a strong call for the adoption of renewable energy and increased efficiency in energy use. The new project leverages the strengths of its partners to introduce renewable energy solutions, notably solar power, and smart technology to optimize energy management.

Key Players Involved

The project is spearheaded by AEI, which focuses on renewable energy initiatives in Indonesia, and SOMA, which provides electricity supply services in western Karimun Island. Additional support comes from AEI’s primary shareholders, including Natural Power Corporation and Alam Port Corporation, along with Kanematsu itself, each contributing their expertise and operational foundations to the initiative.

Project Goals

The goal is to implement solar power generation alongside battery storage capabilities to create a modern mini-grid. The project also intends to incorporate AI technology for remote monitoring of installations and build local talent for maintenance and operation. This will encompass training local personnel to ensure long-term sustainability. Additionally, solutions will be offered to regional industries to enhance energy efficiency and transition their fossil fuel-dependent systems toward electrification.

By promoting an increase in renewable energy supplies and improved energy utilization efficiency, the project aims to meet Indonesia's regulatory standards, thereby contributing significantly to the decarbonization efforts from both supply and demand perspectives.

Kanematsu’s Vision

Kanematsu has outlined its vision in its midterm management plan under the banner of 'integration 1.1', aiming to be a leading provider of efficient and sustainable supply chain transformation solutions. As part of this strategic direction, they are pushing forward the Green Transformation (GX) initiatives not only within the company but also for their partners and clients. Going forward, Kanematsu will provide tailored GX solutions to help achieve a sustainable society.
