Kavalan Wins Whisky of the Year Again at IWC 2026
In an impressive display of craftsmanship, Kavalan has secured the prestigious title of "Whisky of the Year" for the second consecutive time at the International Whisky Competition (IWC) 2026. The accolade was awarded to the Kavalan Peatist Oloroso Sherry Cask Single Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky, which garnered an outstanding score of 96.97 points. This triumphant moment adds to Kavalan's remarkable reputation, as it has been recognized as the world’s best whisky eleven times over the last eleven years.
Last year, the Kavalan Solist Fino Sherry also received the top honor, showcasing the distillery's consistent excellence. The Peatist, developed from lightly peated malt and matured in Oloroso sherry casks, is a tribute to the unique subtropical aging process that enhances its character. Its intriguing profile balances gentle peat smoke with rich flavors that may appeal to both connoisseurs and newcomers alike.
A Glimpse into the Winning Whisky
The whisky's tasting notes, shared by Octavio Bernal, the Master of Scotch at the Council of Whiskey Masters, reveal a complex bouquet of aromas. Initially, the nose teases with hints of oily leather, an earthy tea blend, and a touch of anise, followed by notes of grilled mango, light ash, and white pepper. Upon tasting, flavor profiles burgeon with chocolate-covered raisins and juicy figs, rounded out by a subtle barbecue smokiness. The finish leaves a lingering taste of dark leather, fresh cassis, and roasted cacao nibs.
YT Lee, Chairman of the King Car Group, emphasized that these accolades reflect not only the distillery's technological advancements but also the unwavering dedication and passion of his team. He remarked, "Every award mirrors the efforts of our entire team. It is an honor for our relentless pursuit of excellence to be recognized by some of the most esteemed whisky competitions globally."
Kavalan's achievement at the IWC is particularly significant given the competition's rigorous double-blind tasting process, where every submission is evaluated impartially. Demonstrating its quality, Kavalan secured eight spots among the top 15 whiskies in the competition.
