Freed-Hardeman University Marks Its 90th Annual Bible Lectureship with Matthew's Gospel Theme

Celebrating 90 Years of Spiritual Enlightenment

Freed-Hardeman University (FHU) is set to celebrate a remarkable milestone as it hosts its 90th Annual Bible Lectureship from February 1 to 5, 2026. This annual event convenes Christians, church leaders, and students of the Bible from across the nation for a week filled with teachings, fellowship, and spiritual growth.

The theme for this year's lectureship is "Our God, His Kingdom: Seeing the Christ in Matthew," which aims to explore the profound teachings, miracles, and sacrificial love of Jesus as articulated in the Gospel of Matthew. Dr. Doug Burleson, the Lectureship Director, expressed enthusiasm for the event, highlighting its significance in bringing together thousands for learning and networking opportunities.

FHU's Annual Bible Lectureship stands as a beacon of faith and learning, drawing individuals who are eager to delve deeper into biblical teachings and foster connections with others who share similar values. The event not only enhances the spiritual life of the campus community but also extends its blessings to the surrounding areas.

In honor of the contributions of Dr. James L. Gardner and his wife Becky, the lectureship is dedicated to them for their decades of service to God's church and guidance of countless students. An appreciation dinner will be held on February 3 at the Brewer Sports Center, celebrating their outstanding service.

Additionally, the event will kick off with a Hispanic Lectureship Workshop from January 30 to February 1, aimed at welcoming Spanish-speaking attendees. This dedication to inclusivity underscores FHU's commitment to reaching diverse communities.

Each evening sessions will feature keynote speeches from prominent figures, including FHU President David R. Shannon who will speak on the topic, “Our God Becomes Like One of Us.” Other notable speakers include honoree James L. Gardner and Eric Garner, who will address themes around God’s instruction and leadership in our lives.

For youth and families, there will be a two-day workshop offering over 20 sessions, aimed at fostering skills to better minister to children and families. Special sessions will also target teens, encouraging them in their faith journey, while young children can participate in the Kids Lectureship, requiring early registration by January 18.

In addition to these enriching discussions, teachers and preachers will have opportunities to enhance their skills through a series of specialized classes focusing on biblical teachings. Topics will include "The Preacher's Toolbox," and explorations of biblical prophecy and contemporary applications. As it is the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, a series titled "The Riches and Responsibilities of the American Christian" will delve into the unique freedoms and opportunities that American Christians have enjoyed.

Attendees can also look forward to two new Bible study books released during the lectureship. One will include chapters from 14 men aimed at a general audience, while another, specifically for women, is titled "The Right Side-Up Kingdom in an Upside-Down World." Moreover, resources from FHU Press will provide additional materials such as family devotionals and an extensive 52-week study focusing on the Gospel of Matthew.
