Sinopec Launches Major Polyvinyl Alcohol Production Facility

In a significant development within the chemical manufacturing sector, China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (Sinopec) has officially started operations at its new polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) production facility located in Chongqing. This facility boasts an impressive production capacity of 50,000 metric tons per year, making it the largest integrated site for high-end PVA production worldwide.

A Leap Forward in Production Capabilities

The inauguration of this facility marks a substantial increase in Sinopec's total PVA production capacity at the Chongqing site, raising it to 210,000 metric tons annually. This enhanced capacity is expected to bolster the supply chain for specialized materials used across several high-value industries, including photovoltaics, electronics, optical films, and pharmaceuticals. The production capabilities will also cater to applications that demand a high degree of purity and transparency, essential for high-performance films and safety glass products.

Sinopec’s PVA is known for its water-soluble characteristics and biodegradable properties, making it an attractive choice for a diverse range of industrial and consumer applications. Additionally, the facility is equipped with four recovery units for exhaust gases and wastewater, along with an automated conditioning system that maximizes resource utilization and operational efficiency. Throughout the 17-month construction period, the project team completed 1.98 million work hours without any accidents, underscoring Sinopec's commitment to workplace safety and operational excellence. The team continually optimized equipment performance and process parameters during the initial startup to ensure product quality remained consistent throughout production runs.

With over 40 years of expertise in PVA research and manufacturing, Sinopec’s SVW Chemical has evolved from producing a single type of PVA to now offering more than 100 specialized products. Currently, over 70 of these products find their way into international markets, including Europe and the United States, establishing a strong global presence.
