Ohio's Nurse Anesthetists Honored with AANA Advocacy Award for Legislative Achievements

The American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology (AANA) has decided to honor the Ohio State Association of Nurse Anesthetists (OSANA) with the prestigious Excellence in State Government Relations Advocacy Award during its upcoming Mid-Year Assembly, taking place in Washington, D.C., from April 24 to April 29. This accolade recognizes OSANA's committed efforts in advocating for nurse anesthetists within the state's legislative framework.

Since 2018, OSANA has engaged in a comprehensive evaluation of its advocacy strategies to enhance the profession's representation. This involved facilitating personal visits by legislators to various practice sites where Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) work. These visits provided policy makers with an invaluable perspective on the critical role that nurse anesthesiologists play in delivering anesthesia care across different healthcare settings. The hands-on experiences allowed Ohio legislators to truly appreciate the complexities and expertise required in the field.

A notable highlight of OSANA's advocacy was its support for the election of Kellie Deeter, DNP, CRNA, CNP, who became the first CRNA to serve in the Ohio House of Representatives. This historical achievement underscores OSANA's commitment to increasing the visibility and influence of nurse anesthetists in state governance.

OSANA's advocacy also led to significant legislative accomplishments, including the introduction and successful passage of nondiscrimination language that ensures insurers are held accountable for reimbursement cuts affecting QZ. Furthermore, the association has modernized outdated regulations surrounding CRNAs, aligning state laws more closely with the evolving needs of healthcare delivery in Ohio. One of the critical changes is House Bill 52, which does away with the requirement for physician supervision over anesthetists, opting instead for a collaborative framework. This new law reflects the actual dynamics within anesthesia teams and ensures better operational functionality in various healthcare facilities.

"The success of OSANA is a testament to focused campaigns and illustrates how organized advocacy can lead to meaningful policy changes within healthcare," stated OSANA President Kimberly Riviello, CRNA. Riviello emphasized the importance of strategy, enduring relationship-building, and the dedication of OSANA's members in transforming advocacy from a defense-oriented posture to one of proactive engagement.

Established in 2016, the AANA Excellence in State Government Relations Advocacy Award is granted annually to recognize a state association's exceptional contributions in legislative matters concerning the nurse anesthesiology profession. Nominations for the award undergo a thorough vetting process by the AANA Government Relations Committee, ensuring that outstanding advocacy efforts are duly recognized.

Each year, CRNAs across the country are responsible for safely administering over 58 million anesthetics. They serve in various environments, including traditional hospital surgical suites, obstetrical delivery rooms, critical access hospitals, and more. The diverse settings in which CRNAs operate reflect the significant role they play in overall patient care, further reinforcing the need for strong advocacy within the profession. Their contributions are critical not just to individual patient outcomes but also to broader healthcare systems across the United States.

With this award, the AANA recognizes the critical importance of advocacy in shaping effective policies that support nurse anesthesiology, celebrating the achievements of those dedicated individuals like OSANA who champion the cause for better representation and improved regulations in healthcare. The acknowledgment provides a platform for continued engagement and inspires others in the nursing community to elevate their advocacy efforts for the profession’s future success.
