ALDI, Avantor, and McCain Foods Commit to Climate Leadership Initiative
ALDI, Avantor, and McCain Foods Embrace Climate Leadership
In a significant move towards sustainability, the iconic supermarket chain ALDI, life science leader Avantor, and frozen food brand McCain Foods have joined the Supplier Leadership on Climate Transition (Supplier LOCT) initiative. Launched in 2021, this consortium aims to hasten progress toward science-based greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets by fostering collaborative efforts among various brands.
Creating a Collective Climate Strategy
As part of Supplier LOCT, these companies are now part of a global network of sustainability pioneers dedicated to addressing Scope 3 emissions, which largely come from supply chain activities. Britt Harter, a partner at Guidehouse, the consulting firm steering the initiative, emphasized the importance of suppliers recognizing their role within the larger climate solution. By joining Supplier LOCT, organizations become better equipped to implement strategies that yield tangible reductions in carbon emissions.
"Accelerating climate action demands collaborative efforts. As ALDI progresses in becoming a sustainable grocer, it is imperative for us to assist our suppliers in setting science-based emissions goals," stated Josiah McClellan, ALDI's director of sustainability. This sentiment echoes the widespread acknowledgment that tackling climate change requires all stakeholders to participate earnestly.
Comprehensive Support for Emission Reductions
Supplier LOCT currently comprises 25 dedicated organizations, all committed to assisting nearly a thousand suppliers in measuring, monitoring, and reducing emissions. Through expert-led workshops, Guidehouse provides suppliers with extensive training in developing GHG reduction programs, setting science-based targets, and formulating abatement plans. Notably, suppliers learn to disclose their progress to the Carbon Disclosure Project and other relevant stakeholders.
Avantor’s global sustainability sourcing director, Emma Howcroft, expressed pride in her company’s involvement, underscoring its commitment to enhancing sustainability within the supply chain.
