NitroCapt Wins Food Planet Prize for Innovative Green Nitrogen Fertilizer Technology
NitroCapt: A Game-Changer in Sustainable Fertilization
In a groundbreaking achievement for green technology, Swedish company NitroCapt has been awarded the prestigious Food Planet Prize for 2025, a recognition that comes with a hefty $2 million monetary reward. The award, which is representative of the largest environmental accolade worldwide, was presented by the Curt Bergfors Foundation on June 13, 2025, in Stockholm, shedding light on NitroCapt's significant contributions to creating a sustainable future for farming through innovative nitrogen fertilizer production methods.
NitroCapt's innovative approach tackles one of the biggest environmental challenges facing the agricultural sector today. Traditional nitrogen fertilizers are responsible for a staggering carbon footprint, emitting as much CO2 as the entire aviation industry. However, NitroCapt has pioneered a revolutionary method of producing nitrogen fertilizer using plasma technology, which excels in energy efficiency and reduces reliance on fossil fuels.
The process involves extracting nitrogen from the air and converting it into nitrate fertilizer, utilizing sustainable energy sources. According to Johan Rockström, chairman of the jury, the plasma-based technique employed by NitroCapt dramatically reduces energy consumption by tenfold. Furthermore, by enabling local production of fertilizers, it enhances food security in regions that currently struggle to produce sufficient agricultural outputs.
Gustaf Forsberg, the CEO and founder of NitroCapt, stated, “Our goal is to revolutionize the nitrogen fertilizer industry. The time has come to move away from fossil-fuel-based processes. We aspire to enhance food production, especially in areas where farming is challenged due to insufficient fertilizers.
