Recent research has unveiled a serious issue facing millions of electric vehicle (EV) owners: reliance on the 'State of Health' (SoH) battery metric, which may not provide a complete picture of battery condition. Leading organizations Electrify Europe and ZEVA Global have partnered to emphasize the flaws inherent in this widely adopted measurement. The SoH metric is intended to gauge the remaining capacity of a battery but falls short of assessing critical factors like cell balancing, moisture intrusion, and premature degradation.

The Importance of Accurate Battery Assessment



As the cost of battery replacement can soar into the thousands, understanding battery condition is vital for EV owners. Sven Van Passel, founder of Electrify Europe, notes that having a good SoH reading might not indicate a safely functional battery. He argues that a battery with acceptable SoH can still have severe issues, such as an imbalance of cells or degradation that affects performance. This gap in understanding puts owners at risk of unexpected costs and inconveniences.

The EV market is at a crucial juncture—with a startling increase in leasing volumes of electric vehicles reported by Cox Automotive and J.D. Power. These companies noted a year-on-year surge of between 185% and 230%. The financial implications of battery maintenance remain one of the primary concerns for owners. Many are unaware that an adequate SoH does not guarantee long-term battery health or safety.

Bridging the Transparency Gap



In response to these challenges, Electrify Europe and ZEVA Global have introduced the first global report on battery health through radio frequency technology. This means that EV owners can remotely assess their battery's condition without needing hardware installations or diagnostic tools. Their new service aims to create a more transparent and informed EV ownership experience.

Cedric Blijweert, CEO of Electrify Europe, stated, "Consumers deserve more clarity on the health of the most critical and expensive components of their vehicles." The battery health reports aim to help owners identify potential problems sooner, understand replacement risks better, and make informed decisions throughout their vehicle's lifecycle.

The goal is to set a new standard for transparency in the EV sector, akin to how vehicle history reports have empowered used car buyers. As electric vehicles age and the market continues to grow, accurate battery assessments will become essential for all EV owners.

Raymond Reid, founder of ZEVA Global, emphasizes the need for clarity regarding battery condition. He believes that as investment in EV technology grows, understanding battery health will be integral to the future. "Understanding the state of your battery should be as straightforward as reading your fuel gauge or odometer," he remarked. This commitment to battery transparency signals a new chapter for the EV market.

Currently, the radio frequency battery health reports are available globally for all Tesla vehicles, with plans to include other manufacturers in the near future.
