India Mental Health Alliance: Leveraging Lived Experiences for Better Care Design

India Mental Health Alliance: Empowering Voices in Mental Health Care

On October 10, World Mental Health Day, the India Mental Health Alliance (IMHA) emphasized the importance of lived experiences as a foundation for reforming mental health services, policies, and practices across the country. The IMHA serves as an extensive network consisting of over 400 organizations spread across 30 states in India, advocating for a healthcare paradigm that profoundly values input from those who have encountered mental health challenges.

IMHA was initiated with the belief that addressing mental health is crucial for national development and requires a unified effort. In the past two years, the organization has engaged with 3,380 mental health professionals in over 135 cities, fostering knowledge sharing and cultivating collective skills to effectively embed lived experience into mental health care design and practice.

Dr. Kavita Arora, a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist and founding member of IMHA, highlighted the significance of firsthand accounts in shaping mental health services. She noted that lived experience is not a mere anecdote but a vital source of insight that can redefine how care is delivered. "These experiences illustrate the reality of mental health services, showing how people navigate the system and seek help within various social and cultural frameworks in India," she stated.

In line with this vision, IMHA is in the process of establishing a collaborative Knowledge Hub. This platform aims to make information accessible from various sources, including insights from practitioners, practical lessons, and academic research grounded in local contexts, thus creating a comprehensive resource for mental health information.

A key initiative supporting this mission is IMHA's launch of "Homecoming: Mental Health Journeys of Resilience, Healing, and Wholeness". This anthology features narratives from 11 women leaders sharing their struggles with severe mental health challenges, such as depression, complex PTSD, intergenerational trauma, and anxiety. The stories presented in this book are not just personal accounts; they serve as invitations for society to reflect on and reform the understanding and responses to mental health conditions within families, workplaces, and healthcare settings.

As a nonprofit entity founded late in 2023 through a partnership between Vasvi, Ashish Bharat Ram, Amaha Health, and Children First, IMHA continues to play a pivotal role in India’s mental health landscape. The organization focuses on enhancing the mental health ecosystem by fostering collaboration among stakeholders, building capabilities, and encouraging a culture of cooperation at a large scale. Through its initiatives, IMHA aims to promote mental health as a national priority and enhance the quality of care available nationwide.

Moreover, IMHA seeks to institutionalize lived experience expertise in all aspects of mental health care, paving the way for more equitable services. By raising awareness about mental health issues, advocating for better policies, and ensuring that the voices of those with lived experiences are heard and integrated into service design, IMHA is committed to transforming the mental health care system in India.

In conclusion, as we observe World Mental Health Day, the efforts of IMHA remind us of the essential role lived experiences play in reshaping mental health care practices. By standing together and advocating for change, mental health can become a shared priority that prioritizes the needs of everyone in the community. Collectively, we can work toward a future where mental health care is comprehensive, culturally competent, and fundamentally centered around the individuals it aims to serve.
