India’s Mental Health Alliance Emphasizes Lived Experience in Care Strategies
On October 10th, in recognition of World Mental Health Day, the India Mental Health Alliance (IMHA) proudly asserts its commitment to positioning lived experiences at the heart of mental health care and policy making. This initiative, backed by a cross-sector network of over 400 organizations across 30 Indian states, aims to ensure that the voices of individuals and vulnerable communities affected by mental health challenges are not only heard but actively shape the healthcare landscape.
Founded with the belief that mental health should be a universal development priority, IMHA recognizes that a robust mental health system requires collective responsibility and community engagement. In the recent past, IMHA has collaborated with more than 3,380 mental health professionals across 135 cities, mobilizing its member organizations to develop shared capacities, enhance knowledge exchange, and integrate lived experience expertise into health care design and practice.
Dr. Kavita Arora, a child and adolescent psychiatrist and co-founder of IMHA, highlighted the significance of these lived experiences, stating, "This firsthand knowledge provides crucial insight into the realities of mental health services—as it reflects how individuals navigate the system and seek support within their diverse social and cultural contexts across India." She emphasizes that bridging clinical expertise with experiential and practical knowledge is essential for cultivating a just and contextually responsive mental health ecosystem that addresses the varying needs of people.
As part of its commitment, IMHA is building a collaboratively curated knowledge hub aimed at making diverse insights easily accessible. This hub will encompass perspectives from clinical professionals, practical experiences, lived knowledge, and academic research grounded in local contexts. Among its comprehensive initiatives to elevate lived experience expertise, IMHA is excited to introduce India’s first anthology of personal narratives, titled "Homecoming: Mental Health Journeys of Resilience, Healing, and Wholeness." This moving anthology features accounts from eleven female leaders, who share their burdens in battling severe mental health conditions such as depression, complex PTSD, and anxiety disorders, as well as the fallout of losing loved ones to suicide and generational trauma.
Through these personal narratives, IMHA aims to encourage reflection around how families, communities, workplaces, and healthcare professionals engage with and respond to mental health challenges. It is a call to action for a more informed and empathetic understanding of mental illness, fostering an environment where healing is possible.
In its ongoing mission, IMHA has illustrated the vital role that lived experience plays in shaping mental health systems, and its endeavors to strengthen the Indian mental health ecosystem are commendable. By bringing together leaders from various sectors such as health, equality, livelihoods, climate, and education, IMHA not only aims to build capacity among community-based organizations and healthcare institutions but also actively works to engrain mental health as a national development priority. This involves improving the quality of care and mobilizing dedicated capital for the mental health ecosystem in India.
The alliance’s initiatives signal a progressive shift towards a more inclusive approach to mental health, one that places empathy, understanding, and collective action at the forefront. As mental health continues to be a pressing concern amid a rapidly evolving global landscape, organizations like IMHA underscore the importance of integrating personal experiences into systemic change—offering hope and support to those in need and working towards a healthier society overall.
