Shanghai Electric Achieves World Record in Biomethanol Bunkering Operations on August 17, 2026

Shanghai Electric Sets New Record in Biomethanol Bunkering Operations

On August 17, 2026, Shanghai Electric Company (SEHK: 02727, SSE: 601727) achieved a significant milestone by partnering with the Shanghai International Port Group and CMA CGM Group to conduct a world record biomethanol bunkering operation. This operation involved a staggering total of 8,000 metric tons, marking it as the largest biomethanol bunkering operation ever recorded.

The ceremonial bunkering took place at the Yangshan Port in Shanghai, under the theme, "A World Powered by Green Energy, at the Forefront of the Future." This event is a testament to Shanghai Electric's commitment to sustainability and innovation in energy solutions.

The primary biomethanol supplier for this remarkable operation was Shanghai Electric's Taonan Green Methanol project. This significant achievement not only highlights the increased supply volumes but also confirms that the Taonan project is capable of stable, large-scale production and delivery.

A crucial component behind this achievement is the well-integrated interprovincial supply chain for green fuel, which serves as a central pillar in this operation. During the International Conference on Green Fuels and Sustainable Development in the Maritime Sector held on June 30, the cities of Shanghai, Jilin, and Liaoning officially inaugurated the green fuel-powered transport corridor, resulting from a collaboration among these three entities. This infrastructure defines the north-south route for transporting methanol from the Taonan production site in Jilin Province, through transit and storage at the Dalian Port, to the final bunkering at the Shanghai Port.

The Taonan Green Methanol project, spearheaded by Shanghai Electric, leverages the abundant wind and solar resources in Jilin province along with biomass feedstock. The facility uses fully independently developed process systems and core equipment, making it the world’s pioneering large-scale biomethanol production plant that combines green electricity and biomass. It meets the bunkering needs of vessels at the Shanghai International Maritime Transport Center while providing essential support for the development of three major green fuel centers intended for international maritime transportation.

Moving forward, Shanghai Electric will continue to focus on the entire industrial chain covering production, storage, transportation, and utilization of various green fuels. The company aims to intensify its research on these key technologies and continuously enhance its integrated green fuel solutions chain. By fostering industrial progress through technology-driven innovation, Shanghai Electric collaborates with its partners to accelerate the implementation of the integrated biomass gasification project coupled with green hydrogen production, which aims for green methanol and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) manufacturing in the second phase of the Taonan project.

With plans to progressively scale up its large-scale green fuel supply capabilities for aviation and maritime sectors, Shanghai Electric demonstrates a strong commitment to contributing to China’s national dual carbon goals and accelerating the global transition towards clean, low-carbon energy. Shanghai Electric's initiatives not only aim to set benchmarks within the industry but also highlight the importance of collaborative efforts in securing a sustainable energy future for all.
