Expanding the 'First Menstruation Project' for Girls: A Free Kit Distribution Initiative

Expanding the 'First Menstruation Project'

The collaboration between Meiiku and Kobayashi Pharmaceutical introduces the second phase of the 'First Menstruation Project,' aimed at educating young girls about bodily changes and the importance of understanding their menstrual health. This initiative involves the distribution of 1,000 free kits to PTAs, schools, and organizations, each containing educational materials tailored for elementary school girls.

About the 'First Menstruation Project'

The primary goal of this project is to equip parents and pre-puberty children with accurate information about menstruation and related health issues, particularly focusing on the often overlooked topic of discharge. Parents frequently express concern over their lack of knowledge regarding this subject, leading to challenges in effectively communicating with their children. Feedback received highlights admittance that while menstruation is discussed in educational settings, conversations about discharge remain scarce.

In many curriculum for fourth graders, while topics such as secondary sexual characteristics and menarche are covered, comprehensive education about discharge, which can begin before menstruation, is rarely addressed. Additionally, the prevalence of misleading information online further complicates matters for parents and guardians trying to navigate this new territory alongside their children.

Kit Contents

This year, the kit will include:
  • - A booklet titled 'First Discharge Book' aimed at elementary school girls;
  • - A leaflet for parents, produced by Meiiku and monitored by Dr. Yuka Okada, a gynecologist at Grace Sugiyama Clinic in Shibuya;
  • - High-quality cotton undergarments made from 100% natural cotton for everyday use;
  • - A specialized detergent designed to easily remove menstrual and discharge stains.

The expansion of the initiative not only increases the number of kits from 500 to 1,000 but also introduces distribution to school health rooms. Furthermore, winning PTAs, schools, and organizations will gain access to easy-to-understand videos that illustrate how to relay this information effectively to children.

The Importance of Understanding Discharge

Understanding discharge is pivotal for women's health, serving as an essential bodily indicator. This project strives to provide trustworthy information to both children and their guardians, fostering a safe environment in which they can learn and communicate.
