Engaging Youth in Food Education through Work Experience Events
This summer, Pal System Yamanashi Nagano is hosting a series of exciting work experience events aimed at middle and high school students. Set to take place at the West Katsura Center in Minamitsuru, the Kai Center in Kai City, and the Suwa Center in Suwa City on July 24, August 4, and August 20 respectively, these events provide an excellent opportunity for students to dive into the world of food education and explore potential career paths.
Learning about the Role of Distribution Centers
The events will open the doors of the distribution centers for one day, allowing students to gain firsthand knowledge about the significant roles these facilities play in delivering products right to their homes. They will delve into various tasks, including viewing a massive freezer that operates at -25°C, participating in the loading of trucks, and sorting and recycling logistics materials and packaging. Such experiences help students appreciate the behind-the-scenes work that ensures the quality and safety of food products.
Participants will also have a chance to learn about the logistics side of food distribution, including sustainability practices such as recycling and reusing packaging materials. The chance to sit in a truck and comprehend the driver's perspective on safety will further highlight the importance of transportation safety in their communities.
Understanding Japanese Food Culture
In addition to exploring the operational aspects, students will engage in culinary activities that highlight Japanese food culture. Under the guidance of trained staff, participants will learn how to prepare traditional Japanese dishes using ingredients provided by Pal System. They will compare different types of dashi (Japanese soup stock) and get hands-on experiences in making miso soup from scratch. This practical cooking segment aims to deepen their connection to local produce like the direct delivery rice offered by Pal System, emphasizing understanding and appreciation of quality ingredients.
The day's activities will conclude with a delightful tasting session of the miso soup and rice burgers, where students will have the opportunity to interact with staff, share experiences, and discuss their newfound knowledge. This format not only enriches their cooking skills but also fosters social interaction and teamwork as they work together to prepare and enjoy their meals.
