Exploring Weifang: A Cultural Hub Where Tradition Meets Modernity

Weifang: A Cultural Treasure in China

Weifang, designated as a National Historical and Cultural City, is quickly establishing itself as a vibrant center where tradition and modernity coexist harmoniously. Recently, it hosted the "2026 Weifang Chen Jieqi Stone and Seal Culture Week," an event that drew media representatives from various countries, including South Korea, Pakistan, Morocco, and numerous nations from the Arabian Peninsula.

The opening ceremony for this event showcased the enduring legacy and contemporary evolution of Chinese epigraphy, dramatically illustrated through a single ancient seal, shedding light on the region's rich cultural heritage. A significant highlight was the generous contribution from 14 collectors and institutions worldwide, resulting in a donation of 2,523 historical pieces to the Chen Jieqi Stone and Seal Museum. This addition brought the total collection at the museum to an impressive 4,000 ancient pottery inscriptions and artifacts, making it a treasure trove for both scholars and visitors alike.

At the exhibition, the diversity of international artistry was evident with the display of 1,000 seal-carving works from 19 countries and regions, including Japan, South Korea, Singapore, the United States, and France. Each piece represented unique cultural expressions, fostering a dialogue among creators from different linguistic backgrounds, united within the shared space of the museum.

Notably, during Culture Week, five academic institutions formed strategic cooperations with the Chen Jieqi Museum, enhancing collaborative efforts in preserving and promoting ancient scripts. A cloud-based database launched during the event allows researchers worldwide to access ancient texts without traveling to Weifang, further bridging the gap between historical studies and modern technology. Meanwhile, the China-Japan-South Korea Center for Stone and Seal Carving Exchange and Mutual Learning continued its role as an institutionalized platform, supporting cross-cultural exchanges in this field.

Weifang's cultural identity extends beyond epigraphy. In the Weifang Intangible Cultural Heritage Museum, visitors can experience local crafts such as nut carving, New Year paintings, clay sculptures, and ash-pressed artwork. These traditional crafts are not merely relics of the past but living practices that continue to thrive in the community. The Weifang World Kite Museum is another testament to the city's cultural vibrancy, where Weifang kites—recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage since 2006—capture the imagination and soar into the skies with innovative designs.

Additionally, the historical narrative of Weifang can be traced in Fangci Town, where 166 modern-era buildings still stand. Significant locations such as the former Western Internment Camp in Weixian, now a dedicated museum, encapsulate poignant stories from history and serve as vital venues for promoting peace—a fitting recognition for Weifang, honored as an international peace city.

Finally, Weifang boasts a rich array of cultural titles and accolades, positioning it as a unique destination for those looking to discover the intricate tapestry of Chinese history and contemporary culture. Every corner of this National Famous Historical and Cultural City presents a snapshot of its diverse offerings, making Weifang an essential stop for cultural enthusiasts and global visitors.

Weifang continues to shine brightly on the cultural map of China, ensuring that both its ancient traditions and modern expressions thrive in a continually evolving landscape.
