Why Vinitaly Sees South Africa as a Key Entry Point to Africa's Wine Market

Vinitaly Targets South Africa for African Market Expansion

In Cape Town recently, the focus on Italian wine took center stage at the Italy-South Africa Agricultural Business Forum. This event was not just a gathering; it was a convergence of institutional dialogue and trade, aimed at bolstering relationships between Italy and South Africa, a pivotal market in Africa. The forum kicked off at The Westin Cape Town, where public officials, industry representatives, and companies from both nations came together to share insights and foster business opportunities.

Presence was notable with key figures like Francesco Lollobrigida, Italy's Minister of Agriculture, and John Steenhuisen, South Africa's Minister of Agriculture. Their involvement underscores the government's interest in enhancing agricultural ties. Alongside them were Federico Bricolo, President of Veronafiere, and Matteo Zoppas, President of the Italian Trade Agency (ITA).

As part of this initiative, ITA and Vinitaly co-hosted a masterclass titled "Thirteen Italian Estates, Two Masters of Wine" at Idiom Wines Restaurant, a highlight designed for select professionals from agribusiness, trade, hospitality, and media. This masterclass showcased Italian wines as integral to the broader strategy of promoting Made in Italy in South Africa and beyond.

Matteo Zoppas emphasized the importance of creating structured partnerships to advance mutual interests between Italy and South Africa. He articulated the significance of the agreement signed during the forum which aims to facilitate cooperation in promoting Italian products. His remarks positioned Vinitaly as a key player in elevating Italian wine and showcasing its global appeal.

The tasting session led by renowned Masters of Wine, Richard Kershaw and Andrea Lonardi, highlighted thirteen distinct Italian wine estates. This selection ranged from well-known regions in Northern Italy to lesser-known areas in the South and its islands. Through this curated showcase, South African and African wine professionals gained insights into the diverse stylistic nuances, regional characteristics, and commercial viability of Italian wines.

Kershaw introduced an array of featured estates including Bottega, Bosco del Merlo, and Donnafugata, which became a focal point for discussions on quality and potential market success. Meanwhile, Lonardi portrayed the tasting as an opportunity to encapsulate the essence of Italian wines, aiming to communicate their individuality and market appeal to seasoned professionals.

Lonardi pointed out that South Africa, with its rich wine culture, represents an avenue for Italian wines seeking to establish a firm footing in Africa. By presenting Italian wines through a contextual lens, they aim to carve a distinct niche in this growing market.

Veronafiere’s President, Federico Bricolo, articulated a broader strategy, asserting that South Africa serves as a crucial gateway to the African continent for Italian wine. His comments highlight Vinitaly’s ambition to invest in the region, recognizing the tremendous opportunities that lie beyond South Africa's borders.

The day's activities culminated in an extensive tasting event featuring 21 Italian wines paired with exquisite Italian dishes. Participants enjoyed exceptional culinary creations prepared by Chef Enrico Derflingher, honoring the UNESCO recognition of Italian cuisine.

Throughout this initiative, ITA, alongside Veronafiere and Vinitaly, aimed to act as a conduit between Italian wine producers and the African market. This strategy not only promotes Italian wine culture but also lays the groundwork for long-term partnerships and market development in the region.
