The 2026 Career Choices: Insights from Today's High School Students

2026 Career Aspirations of High School Students

On July 1st, the high school job hunting season officially began, and alongside it, a survey conducted by JinJib in Osaka has shed light on the career aspirations of high school students for 2026. The survey was carried out from May 8 to June 19, 2023, during the "Career Fair 2026," an event aimed at providing job experience for high schoolers. Out of the 898 participating students, insightful data on desired occupations and preferred industries has been accumulated.

Survey Highlights

  • - The most sought-after occupation for 2026 remains service industry, securing a top position for three consecutive years, with 14.6% of students expressing this preference.
  • - In terms of preferred industries, the entertainment and creative sector took the lead, surpassing last year's frontrunner, the manufacturing sector. Interestingly, for high school students actively seeking employment, manufacturing remains the industry of choice.
  • - The primary concern among students regarding their future careers was a lack of clarity about their career interests, with 40.2% hesitant about what they truly want to pursue.

Context of the Survey

In today's high school job market, the ratio of job offers to job seekers stands at 4.12 times (according to the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare), indicating a fiercer competition among companies. However, students often have limited exposure to various professions during their school life, leading to difficulties in making informed decisions about their future careers within the tightly-bound timeframe from July job information release to September applications. This lack of self-awareness and understanding of the job market is often cited as a factor contributing to early turnover rates.

JinJib's initiative to monitor the evolving occupational preferences of high school students began in 2023. This year, the survey analyzed not only the overall rankings but also focused specifically on students hoping for employment, providing valuable insights for companies considering high school recruitment as well as students and educators.

Rankings and Preferences

In the full ranking of desired jobs, students indicated their top choices as follows:
1. Service Industry - 14.6%
2. Accounting/Administration - 11.7%
3. Designer - 11.2%
4. Illustrator - 11.0%
5. YouTuber/Influencer - 10.5%
6. Game Creator - 7.2%

Students expressed their attraction to positions where they can engage with people and express creativity, with many mentioning their direct experiences in part-time jobs as influencing factors that solidify these choices.

Analysis of Desired Industries

When it came to the industries students wish to work in:
1. Entertainment and Creative Industries - 22.2%
2. Manufacturing - 18.3%
3. Hospitality and Tourism - 15.8%
4. Animal and Environmental - 15.5%
5. Public Sector - 13.6%
6. IT and Communication - 12.4%

The increased interest in the entertainment and creative sector indicates a pronounced inclination towards careers that align with their hobbies, demonstrating that many students desire to transform their passions into professions.

Clarifying Future Plans

When asked about their post-graduation plans, 41.4% of students opted for employment, while 19.9% conveyed that they were undecided, illustrating a significant proportion still searching for clarity in their career paths.

The top concerns related to their career choices highlighted a lack of self-awareness and fear of not being able to pursue their desired paths —an essential insight for educators and employers seeking to understand and engage with this demographic more effectively.

Conclusion

The survey highlights a duality in students' aspirations: a desire to pursue their passions contrasted with the practical realities of potential job opportunities. This duality underscores the importance of experiential learning, as many students acknowledged that participating in events like the Career Fair genuinely sparked their interest in specific roles or industries.

Incorporating hands-on experiences and interactions with professionals can help bridge the gap between their ambitions and reality, guiding high school students in making well-informed and meaningful career choices.
