Travelex Expands Traveler's Check Exchange Services Beginning August 2025

A New Era for Traveler's Checks in Japan

Travelex Japan, known for its impressive network of currency exchange services, is set to enhance its offerings with a new mail-in service for Traveler's Checks issued by Sumitomo Mitsui Banking, effective August 1, 2025. Previously, the exchange of these checks could only be conducted at Travelex storefronts. Now, customers can conveniently send their checks by mail without the need to visit a physical location.

The Unveiling of the Mail-In Purchase Service

This newly introduced mail-in purchase service aims at simplifying the process for individuals residing in Japan. If you have Traveler's Checks stored away at home, you will soon be able to convert them into cash without stepping outside. This is a significant step toward enhancing customer experience by providing a hassle-free alternative.

How the Service Works

To utilize the new mail-in service, customers must follow a few simple steps:
1. Prepare Required Documents: You must write your signature on two designated areas of the Traveler's Check.
2. Complete the Application Form: Fill out the Traveler's Check mail-in purchase request application.
3. Include Proof of Purchase: Provide either a purchase certificate or receipt. If you do not have this document, specify the location and date of purchase on the application form.
4. Government ID: Include a copy of a valid public identification document.
5. Send it via Registered Mail: Dispatch these documents through registered mail to Travelex.

Eligible Currency Types for Exchange

The service will accept various types of Traveler's Checks from several issuers including:
  • - Thomas Cook: USD, EUR, GBP, AUD, CAD, CHF, HKD.
  • - Interpayment: USD, EUR, GBP, AUD, CAD.
  • - Barclays Bank: USD, GBP, CAD.
  • - American Express: USD, EUR, GBP, AUD, CAD.
  • - Sumitomo Mitsui Banking: USD.
Note that Japanese Yen Traveler's Checks can only be exchanged at Travelex stores.

Transaction Limits

Each customer can exchange checks up to 300,000 JPY per transaction, with a daily limit of 600,000 JPY and a cumulative maximum of 1,500,000 JPY over 30 days. This limit applies to the combined total of transactions using both the mail-in purchase service and other foreign currency mail-in purchase services provided by Travelex.

Exchange Fees and Payment

The payment for exchanged checks will be processed through a designated Japanese bank account. A fee of 550 JPY (including tax) will be deducted from the offered exchange amount. The exchange rate applicable will be determined by the rate on the day Travelex receives and processes the checks.

Important Considerations for Travelers Checks

Please note that not all checks are eligible for exchange. Travelex cannot accept checks that are stained, written upon, frayed, broken, stamped, or emit any unusual odors. In addition, checks that have been reported as lost or stolen, or that have undergone reissue processes, cannot be processed. Only checks purchased by the applicant personally will be accepted, and signatures must be present in both required locations.

Who Can Take Advantage?

This service is specifically tailored for individual customers residing within Japan, allowing for a more flexible approach to managing unused Traveler’s Checks, especially those who may find it inconvenient to visit a bank or currency dealer.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Travelex continues to innovate and provide enhanced services to meet the evolving needs of its customers. This mail-in service for Traveler's Checks represents a significant advancement in ensuring that currency exchange is as seamless and accessible as possible, encouraging travelers to utilize these checks with confidence.
