Tachikawa City Introduces a New Partnership and Family Declaration System

On March 1, 2023, Tachikawa City launched a groundbreaking Partnership and Family Declaration System aimed at fostering gender equality and recognizing diverse family structures. This progressive initiative is designed to support couples, including those from sexual minorities, by providing official documentation of their partnerships and family relationships.

The Initiative's Purpose and Details

The system allows couples, where either one or both partners identify as sexual minorities, to submit a Declaration of Partnership or Family Declaration to the city. Upon submission, the city issues a certificate and proof card acknowledging the declaration. This initiative aligns with the fundamental principles of the Gender Equality Promotion Basic Ordinance in Tachikawa, which emphasizes the importance of respecting individual identities and promoting a society where everyone can express their unique characteristics and capabilities.

The first couple to utilize this system will receive their official certificate from the mayor, marking a significant moment for both the city and the local LGBTQ+ community. The ceremony is scheduled for March 11, 2023, at 5:00 PM at the mayor's office located on the second floor of the city hall. The event is expected to last about 30 minutes and media outlets are welcomed to cover the momentous occasion, as consent has been given by the participants.
