Joseph & Norinsberg LLC Files Discrimination Lawsuit Against Accenture LLP

Joseph & Norinsberg LLC has initiated a federal lawsuit against Accenture LLP in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. The case, with the number 126-cv-03983-MMG, involves claims brought forth by Joseph M. Nelzy, alleging racial and religious discrimination, as well as retaliation that occurred during his employment at Accenture. Mr. Nelzy, who graduated from Cornell University, joined Accenture in July 2018. Over the course of nearly seven years, he rose through the ranks, receiving multiple promotions and accolades for his performance. However, a turn of events in 2020 coincided with Mr. Nelzy starting to grow dreadlocks in a commitment to his Rastafarian faith. This hairstyle is not only a personal choice but is also intertwined with his religious beliefs. The lawsuit asserts that this hairstyle represents a sincerely held religious observance and is considered a protective hairstyle under legal protections.

The complaint filed by Joseph & Norinsberg LLC outlines nine allegations that span various federal, state, and local laws. These include accusations of racial discrimination and retaliation under federal law (42 U.S.C. § 1981), as well as similar claims under both New York State and City Human Rights laws. In addition, the lawsuit calls attention to violations of the CROWN Act, which is designed to prohibit discriminatory practices based on natural hairstyles.

Mr. Nelzy's situation took a critical turn following internal complaints he made to Accenture's Inclusion and Diversity leadership, which he filed in February 2025. Just 57 days later, on April 10, 2025, he was terminated. Accenture cited company downsizing as the reason for his termination; however, the complaint argues that this justification was pretextual. In a significant supporting detail, the lawsuit refers to recorded conversations with a director at Accenture, which purportedly acknowledges that Mr. Nelzy's hairstyle played a part in staffing decisions.

John J. Meehan, Lead Counsel at Joseph & Norinsberg LLC, expressed strong convictions regarding the case, labeling it among the clearest instances of racial and religious discrimination he has encountered in his career. He stated, 'Mr. Nelzy committed seven years to Accenture, receiving recognition for his work and promotions throughout that time. He was let go not based on performance, but due to who he is.' By drawing parallels between Mr. Nelzy's dreadlocks and other religious symbols—such as a Christian's cross or a Jewish individual's yarmulke—Meehan underscores the belief that an employer should not penalize an employee for their religious observances.

The lawsuit is seeking various forms of relief, including declaratory judgments, compensatory and punitive damages, recovery of lost wages and benefits, attorneys’ fees, and any other relief deemed appropriate by the court.

Joseph & Norinsberg LLC is a dedicated employment law firm based in New York City, offering its services to individuals facing workplace discrimination, sexual harassment, retaliation, wrongful termination, and other related issues across New York, New Jersey, and Massachusetts. This lawsuit not only aims to address Mr. Nelzy's grievances but also advocates for broader employment equality and respect for diverse cultural identities in the workplace.
