Operation BBQ Relief Celebrates 15 Years of Service with a Return to Joplin's Roots

Operation BBQ Relief Returns to Joplin, Missouri

On May 22, 2026, Operation BBQ Relief® (OBR) will revisit Joplin, Missouri, the city where it all began, to commemorate a significant milestone—the 15th anniversary of the devastating EF5 tornado that struck on May 22, 2011. This event, celebrated during National Barbecue Month, aims to honor the lives lost and acknowledge the resilience of the Joplin community.

The gathering will take place at Cunningham Park, a notable location as it includes the Butterfly Memorial, which pays tribute to tornado victims. OBR’s mission has been clear: to provide comfort through the power of barbecue. This year’s event will see OBR’s skilled pitmasters and enthusiastic volunteers serving free hot barbecue meals, including their signature pulled pork sandwiches with an apple barbecue drizzle, alongside cheesy corn, granola bars, and bottled water. Both citizens of Joplin and first responders are invited to come together to enjoy a meal, reflect, and share in the bonds of community.

In addition to the meal distribution, the evening before the event, a live remembrance show titled JOPLIN 15 YEARS LATER will premiere on The Weather Channel. Hosted by veteran meteorologist Mike Bettes, the broadcast will reflect on the impact of the tornado and the incredible recovery journey that followed.

In the aftermath of the tragic tornado in 2011, which resulted in the loss of 161 lives and destruction of countless homes, a united group of competitive pitmasters from various states sprung into action. They served over 120,000 meals within just 13 days, showcasing the BBQ community's compassion and commitment to helping those in need. This spontaneous demonstration of support laid the groundwork for the establishment of Operation BBQ Relief, which has since become a crucial resource for communities affected by natural disasters across the nation.

Stan Hays, the Co-Founder and CEO of OBR, reflects on this impactful history: “Fifteen years ago, the Joplin tornado showed us the healing power of a hot meal and the generosity of the BBQ community. We are coming back to honor the lives lost, celebrate this community's incredible resilience, and give back to the people who inspired our entire mission. This event is about remembrance, gratitude, and continuing to deliver comfort when it matters most.”

The first barbecue service of the day will kick off at noon, welcoming community members to gather at Cunningham Park for the offerings and the shared experience.

Additionally, OBR is launching its 15-year anniversary celebration with other events, such as the Heroes Golf Classic on May 18, which aims to raise funds for its various programs, including Camp OBR. This prestigious golf tournament, presented by Mercury 1 and Adams Cable, promises a day filled with golf at two top-notch Kansas City golf courses: The National Golf Club and The Bluffs Golf Club.

Participants will have a chance to network with supporters and enjoy delicious barbecue from some of the best pitmasters in the area while contributing to a cause that provides life-changing support for veterans, first responders, and their families.

Since its inception, Operation BBQ Relief has served over 13 million meals nationwide, extending beyond disaster relief. The organization is dedicated to enrichment through programs like Camp OBR, a retreat that provides outdoor experiences and culinary therapy to military members, veterans, and their families. OBR also actively participates in the Always Serving Project to honor and serve military personnel throughout the year.
