Western University Honors Philanthropist with New Medical College Name
Western University of Health Sciences Renames College
Western University of Health Sciences, known for its pioneering role in healthcare education, has officially announced that its College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific-Northwest will be renamed the Heatherington College of Osteopathic Medicine. This significant change comes in tribute to Jeff Heatherington, a dedicated leader and philanthropist who has been a lifelong advocate for osteopathic medicine in Oregon.
This noteworthy deed marks a momentous occasion in the university’s 48-year journey, as it is the first time a college within WesternU's structure will bear the name of a major benefactor. The Heatherington Foundation for Innovation and Education in Health Care, led by Heatherington, has made substantial contributions to the university, amounting to over $50 million. Among these generous philanthropies, the donation of 150 acres of riverfront property in Lebanon, Oregon is earmarked for a new campus and the launch of a graduate program in behavioral health therapy.
Dr. Robin Farias-Eisner, President of WesternU, expressed the importance of this naming, stating, "This naming is more than symbolic. It reflects a legacy built on advocacy, innovation, and service." The renaming of the college aligns with the university's mission to educate the next generation of healthcare leaders and is intended to enhance the educational structure and facilities for future osteopathic physicians.
Jeff Heatherington has been a pivotal figure in the osteopathic profession for nearly five decades. As the Executive Director of the Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons of Oregon and a former member of the Oregon Health Council, he played a crucial role in enhancing clinical training for osteopathic students. His vision and efforts culminated in the establishment of COMP-Northwest in 2011, which has successfully produced over 1,100 Osteopathic Physicians, many actively serving in Oregon and throughout the Northwest.
Heatherington's contributions to healthcare have been duly recognized. He received the Distinguished Service Certificate from the American Osteopathic Association in 2007, further complemented by the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Osteopathic Foundation in 2021, reflecting his commitment to the field of osteopathic medicine.
In collaboration with Samaritan Health Services in Corvallis, Oregon, Heatherington's foresight led to the development of enhanced clinical training opportunities for D.O. students, reinforcing his commitment to advancing osteopathic education and practice. Furthermore, Heatherington has served tirelessly as a member of the Board of Trustees, where he was honored with a Doctor of Humane Letters from WesternU.
The legacy of his family also exists within this narrative, as his father, Dr. J. Scott Heatherington, was a highly regarded osteopathic physician and leader. Dr. J. Scott's contributions to the field were extensive, having held significant positions, including the presidency of the American Osteopathic Association. His impact continues to resonate, as evidenced by the endowed scholarship at COMP-Northwest in his memory, fostering a continued connection between the Heatherington family, education, and the osteopathic profession.
The new Heatherington College of Osteopathic Medicine will soon grace the strategically located property, facilitating the construction of a state-of-the-art academic building. This institution will notably be the only osteopathic medical school in Oregon, playing a critical role in shaping the landscape of healthcare education in the region.
Western University of Health Sciences remains at the forefront of health education, with a mission that encompasses a wide array of disciplines, including medical sciences, nursing, pharmacy, and osteopathic medicine, among others. The renaming of the college not only honors a significant contributor to health education but also emphasizes the ongoing commitment to fostering innovation and excellence in healthcare education for future generations.
