Japan's National Sports Festival Set to Be Held in Gunma and Nara Prefectures

On July 15, 2026, the Japan Sports Association (JSPO) made significant announcements regarding the upcoming National Sports Festivals. The 83rd edition of this much-anticipated event, a celebration of sports that embodies the spirit of sportsmanship across Japan, is officially set to take place in Gunma Prefecture in 2029. Meanwhile, Nara Prefecture has been designated as the future host for the 85th National Sports Festival, scheduled for 2031.

The decision was made during the third board meeting of the 2026 fiscal year, where key figures including Yoshitaka Yamamoto, the Governor of Gunma Prefecture, and Makoto Yamashita, the Governor of Nara Prefecture, were present. This decision marks a crucial step in fostering a vibrant sports culture within these regions, emphasizing the importance of creating environments that encourage participation and support for sports activities.

Since its establishment in 1911, initially as the Greater Japan Athletic Association, the JSPO has played a vital role in promoting both national sports and raising international competitiveness. It was renamed in April 2018 to better reflect its mission and vision in nurturing sports ambitions across all age groups.

The National Sports Festival, previously known as the National Sports Meet, is a highlight event for promoting sportsmanship among Japanese citizens. It brings together athletes of all ages, helping to develop a more sports-literate society. The upcoming festivals in Gunma and Nara promise to showcase local talents while also fostering community spirit and cooperation among residents.

JSPO’s endeavors also extend to organizing an array of sports competitions, such as the Japan Sports Masters and various generation-inclusive sports events. Moreover, the organization is committed to supporting sports through the establishment of sports clubs and training programs for sport coaches, ensuring that opportunities for engaging in sports are accessible to everyone.

With a network spanning over 60 sports organizations and 47 prefectural sports associations, JSPO acts as a unifying force in Japan's sports sector. The initiative not only aims to encourage citizens to engage actively in sports but also strives to promote the social aspects of sports through events that draw in the community.

As the momentum builds towards the 83rd and 85th festivals, Gunma and Nara are gearing up to welcome participants and spectators alike, creating a festive atmosphere filled with sporting excellence. For many, these events will not only signify the hard work and dedication of athletes but also serve as a reminder of the unifying power of sports in Japan.
