Cohen Veterans Network Launches Resources for Military Children to Adapt to Change Amidst Frequent Relocations

Supporting Military Kids: Resources from Cohen Veterans Network

April is recognized as the Month of the Military Child, a significant time to honor the resilience and challenges faced by over 1.6 million military children across the United States. The Cohen Veterans Network (CVN), a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting veterans and their families, has stepped up to offer vital resources aimed at helping these children manage the stress that comes with military life.

Military families often undergo frequent relocations, typically moving three times more often than their civilian counterparts. This results in military children changing schools an average of six to nine times throughout their educational journey. Such constant change can lead to emotional and psychological issues; a recent survey revealed that only 8% of military teens report high mental health well-being, whereas a staggering 35% reported lower well-being levels.

Dr. Anthony Hassan, the President and CEO of Cohen Veterans Network, stated, "Military children face unique challenges that require resilience and adaptability. At CVN, we are committed to providing families with the tools they need to help their children thrive, no matter the changes or circumstances they may face."

The new initiatives include various guides and strategies tailored for parents and caregivers to support military children during pivotal moments in their lives:

1. Helping Children Thrive During a PCS Move: A Parent's Guide - This guide offers practical tips for easing the transition for children during Permanent Change of Station (PCS) moves.

2. Managing Military Separations: Expert Tips for Families - This resource aids families in helping their children maintain a strong connection during deployments and training periods.

3. Supporting Military Kids During the Transition to Civilian Life - A guide focused on fostering open communication to assist military children in adjusting smoothly to life outside the military environment.

Since its establishment in 2016, CVN has positively impacted the lives of over 82,000 individuals, including around 17% who are children. They offer mental health services not only for veterans but also for their families, including spouses and caregivers. The organization runs 22 clinics across 20 states, providing both in-person and telehealth services, ensuring accessibility for those in need.

For families looking to access these new resources and tools, more information can be found on the CVN's website at cohenveteransnetwork.org/militarykids. This commitment reflects CVN’s ongoing mission: to enhance mental health outcomes and provide necessary support to military families navigating the complexities of military life.

Understanding and addressing the unique challenges faced by military children is vital for their growth and mental health. The Cohen Veterans Network stands as a beacon of hope, providing the necessary tools and support for these young individuals to thrive, regardless of the uncertainties they may encounter in their lives.
