MAGO MOTORS JAPAN Launches the MANA Electric Minibus in Ghana
On June 19, 2026, MAGO MOTORS JAPAN, headquartered in Minato City, Tokyo, introduced its electric minibus, referred to as 'MANA' under the MAGO group, during a launch event at the MENSVIC GRAND HOTEL in Accra, Ghana. This large hotel, frequently used for conferences by the Japanese community, is conveniently located just a 10-minute drive from the airport via major roads. This new minibus will serve as a shuttle for hotel guests, reflecting a significant step towards sustainable transportation solutions in Ghana.
The launch event was attended by 32 participants, including officials from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Ghana Office, the Japanese Embassy in Ghana, local government representatives, and members from various universities. Notably, vehicle wrapping for the MANA minibus was carried out by Qvou, known for its 'NOMU SILICA' product, in collaboration with JICA. This partnership underscores a shared commitment to addressing environmental and poverty issues in Ghana, particularly in its urban slum areas.
About the MANA Project
The MANA electric minibus is produced and marketed by Assemble Point Co., Ltd., also based in Tokyo. MAGO MOTORS JAPAN acquired and manages this vehicle, spearheading its introduction in Ghana. Four Ghanaian automotive engineers from MAGO MOTORS LTD. underwent a six-month training program on electric vehicle assembly at Assemble Point's facility in the Philippines during the summer of 2024. Upon returning to Ghana, they will apply their skills to local assembly initiatives, reinforcing the introduction of electric minibus technology under MAGO MOTORS JAPAN’s leadership. This project aims not only to establish approximately 10,000 jobs in Ghana but also promote the penetration of electric buses, thereby enhancing local living standards and fostering a sustainable ecosystem.
Features of MANA
One of the standout features of the MANA minibus is its swappable battery technology, allowing it to operate without relying entirely on electric charging stations. This capability is particularly beneficial in areas where large EV charging infrastructure is unavailable or impractical. The MANA minibus is making inroads in Southeast Asia, including the Philippines, emphasizing environmentally friendly transit options.
Overview of MAGO MOTORS JAPAN
MAGO MOTORS JAPAN operates under the concept of 'sustainable capitalism,' which strives to resolve socio-economic challenges through continuous economic activities across culture, economy, and social contribution. Focusing on the Agbogbloshie slum in Ghana, known as the world's largest electronic waste disposal site, the company aims to reduce local waste while improving air and soil conditions, with a target of creating 10,000 jobs by 2030 through electric vehicle initiatives, recycling, and agricultural projects.
Leaders' Reflections
Taichi Kimura, a director at MAGO MOTORS JAPAN, expressed gratitude for the support received over the four years leading up to this launch. He acknowledged the challenges Ghana faces regarding electric vehicle regulations and infrastructure but emphasized this project as a major leap towards generating clean, sustainable jobs. He affirmed the company's commitment to social issue resolution through sustainable capitalism.
Ryutaro Kubo, the representative of Qvou, emphasized the significance of the MANA initiative in reducing environmental impact while fostering local economic development. He highlighted its potential for transforming mobility into a sustainable model that aligns with the company's vision of enhancing customers' lives. He voiced optimism regarding the project's future, which combines public-private collaboration to build future infrastructure.
Takayuki Uchiyama, the director of JICA Ghana Office, described the minibus not just as a mode of transport but as a 'message' promoting environmental responsibility and inclusive social development. He expressed anticipation for the integration of local children's art, created with support from JICA's initiatives, into the bus branding, aiming to set new standards in Ghana.
Conclusion
MAGO MOTORS JAPAN's initiative with the MANA electric minibus marks an essential progression towards sustainable mobility in Ghana. The endeavors undertaken aim to cultivate local talent, foster economic growth, and simultaneously address significant social challenges. The successful implementation of this project will pave the path for more sustainable practices in the region while creating a lasting impact on the community.
