Lotte's Innovative Campaign to Beat the Summer Heat
As Japan grapples with an increasingly harsh summer, Lotte, a prominent food and beverage company, has implemented a refreshing initiative known as the "Cool Shelter Project." Launched in various heat-affected areas, this project aims to create comfortable environments where people can beat the heat while enjoying free ice treats.
Expansion of the Cool Shelter Project
Following the initial weatherization efforts, Lotte rolled out the second phase of the Cool Shelter Project in two bustling locations: Namba in Osaka starting from August 3rd and Kumagaya in Saitama beginning August 8th. These locations were targeted strategically, considering their exposure to extreme temperatures. At these sites, Lotte installed umbrellas and shelters to provide shaded areas for visitors seeking respite from the relentless summer sun. The installation at Namba came to a close on August 14th, signaling the success of this temporary retreat.
In addition to the shelters, attendees were delighted with free servings of Lotte's popular ice cream products, "Coolish" and "Sō," which were given out at both venues, turning out to be the highlight of the event and drawing impressive crowds. Countless visitors flocked to sample the complimentary frozen treats, making it a major success.
The Namba Experience
Located at the heart of Osaka’s bustling shopping and tourist district, Namba Square transformed into a vibrant “cool spot” where locals and tourists alike could take a much-needed break. The turnout was extraordinary; as soon as the shelter was operational, visitors swiftly filled the space. Under the canopies, people enjoyed their free ice treats, poured into conversations with friends, and captured memorable moments lounging on cushions adorned with product packaging. This bustling atmosphere reflected the project's mission of building a community space that welcomed a diverse crowd looking for a respite from the sweltering heat.
A Hub for Kumagaya Residents
Kumagaya, notorious for being one of Japan's hottest cities, saw an even more enthusiastic response. On the inaugural day, more than 300 people formed a line before the giveaway began, quickly filling the mall corridors and overwhelming the ice distribution team. In just 45 minutes, the allotted ice treats were completely distributed. Families under the cool umbrellas engaged in lively discussions while enjoying their ice cream, fostering a sense of community that was palpable. As locals expressed their appreciation, sentiments like, "Let's come back next week!" and "It’s great to have a shaded spot while shopping!" echoed the need for such restful spaces during a heatwave. The project quickly established itself as a beloved retreat where residents could unwind and escape the oppressive climate.
Continuing the Mission
Lotte’s vision for the Cool Shelter Project extends beyond this summer, as the company emphasizes partnering with various locations heavily impacted by heat. By doing so, they aim to continually offer safe and refreshing venues for people to enjoy their summers without discomfort. The initiative not only provides physical relief from heat but also encourages social interaction and community bonding during these high-temperature months.
