Karl Waller's Brass Tap in Marina Shines with Highest Sales Volume Award

Karl Waller's Remarkable Achievement at The Brass Tap

At the 2026 FSC Franchise Conference, a significant recognition was bestowed upon Karl Waller, the owner of The Brass Tap in Marina, California. The prestigious Highest Sales Volume Award underlines the tremendous success of Waller’s establishment, which only recently completed its first year of operation. This accolade follows on the heels of his 2025 Franchisee of the Year honor, marking a remarkable trajectory for both Waller and The Brass Tap franchise.

Waller, a former executive in global supply chain management, returned to his roots in Marina nearly four decades after leaving the area. With a vision to fill a noticeable gap for a social and dining venue, Waller aimed to create a welcoming place for locals. He emphasized the importance of local community engagement, stating, “We were working side by side with the community to ensure everyone knew we weren't just a business. We were part of the community.” This philosophy has laid the groundwork for building trust and long-lasting relationships with customers, significantly influencing the growth of his business.

Before his journey with The Brass Tap, Waller accumulated a wealth of experience while working at Amway Corporation for 25 years, eventually serving as the director of global agribusiness operations. After retiring early from this role, he explored various business ventures, including a previous stint in franchising with Mail Boxes Etc., which later transformed into The UPS Store. Waller's discovery of The Brass Tap came serendipitously during a visit to a Texas location, where he recognized the potential to introduce its unique offerings to Marina, a region experiencing new developments but lacking diverse dining options.

“I found that [Marina] was described as a desert for this type of business,” Waller recounted. “People were looking for a nice place to eat, drink, and enjoy themselves.” This understanding guided him in creating an establishment that not only served high-quality food and craft beers but also became a hub for entertainment in the community.

Since opening, Waller has prioritized customer preferences, leading to adjustments in the menu and offerings. Initially anticipating that craft beer would be the primary attraction, he quickly learned that food was equally significant in drawing families and patrons seeking a vibrant atmosphere. “We have continuously tweaked our menu and offerings based on what the locals desire,” Waller noted, indicating his adaptive approach to business management.

To ensure the restaurant operates efficiently, Waller has constructed an experienced management team that oversees daily operations, allowing him to focus on community connection and orchestrating special events. He expressed his resolve not to become a typical owner-operator: “From day one, I didn't want my business's success to solely depend on my efforts. I spend my time working on the business instead of in it.” This strategic decision has empowered him to engage more personally with his customers.

The recognition of the Highest Sales Volume is a testament not just to Waller's business acumen but to The Brass Tap’s overall growth as a franchise. With over 50 locations nationwide, The Brass Tap has established itself as a go-to for craft beers, innovative cocktails, quality dining, and live entertainment, all wrapped in a friendly, neighborhood atmosphere.

Chris Elliott, CEO of FSC Franchise Co., praised Waller's achievements, noting, “Winning Franchisee of the Year and then Highest Sales Volume the next year takes more than just a good location. Karl has listened to his guests, expanded the food and events side of the business to meet community needs, and has trusted his managers to carry out the daily operations.”

The Brass Tap stands as more than just a bar; it's a vibrant social gathering where crafted culinary experience meets community spirit. With its chef-inspired menu and a wide range of beverages, it invites guests for every occasion—from catching a game to celebrating milestones with friends and family. Waller's accomplishment serves as a reminder of the rewarding outcomes of dedication, community involvement, and business savvy.
