CARD Acknowledges Libby Community as They Prepare to Cease Patient Services
After more than two decades of dedicated work, the Center for Asbestos Related Disease, Inc. (CARD) has announced it will close its patient services in Libby, Montana, by the end of August 2026. This decision comes due to the non-renewal of federal grant funding, which constituted the majority of CARD's operational revenue. In light of this significant shift, CARD is taking time to reflect on its journey, expressing heartfelt gratitude to everyone involved.
For more than 20 years, CARD has played a vital role in providing essential support to individuals and families affected by asbestos exposure in Libby. The organization has been a lifeline for many residents, offering a variety of services including asbestos health screenings, lung cancer screenings, case management, and educational outreach. Its work has been deeply intertwined with the community, contributing to significant advancements in understanding asbestos-related diseases and public health practices.
As the organization embarks on this challenging transition, CARD is taking steps to ensure that all pending activities are concluded smoothly, prioritizing the accessibility of patient medical records. Tracy McNew, the Executive Director of CARD, emphasized the importance of this moment, stating, “We are deeply grateful to the Libby community and to everyone who has supported CARD's work for more than two decades.” She acknowledged how the community has shaped the organization’s impact in the realms of public health and disaster response in relation to asbestos exposure.
While patient services will continue until the end of August, it’s important to note that CARD will not offer long-distance screening services moving forward. Responsible closure is vital, and CARD aims to avoid initiating new services that cannot be completed before the organization closes its doors. The staff is expected to assist with the organization’s shutdown while ensuring that they comply with federal grant closeout requirements.
Additionally, CARD is working with the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) to facilitate a smooth closure process. ATSDR is committed to informing the public about the future of the Asbestos Screening and Innovation Program, with an announcement anticipated soon.
Patients are encouraged to request copies of their medical records promptly, as staff will have limited time and resources to process these requests. Post-closure access to records will be arranged, but the details of that process are still under development.
For those with additional questions, CARD remains accessible to the public at their office located at 118 W. 3rd Street in Libby, with available hours for inquiries from Monday to Wednesday.
Through its extensive work in Libby, CARD has significantly contributed to over 150 scientific papers and studies, enhancing the understanding of asbestos exposure and its long-term effects. The influence of CARD’s work will linger despite the organization’s imminent closure, marking a legacy in public health and patient care.
As CARD prepares for this transition, it extends heartfelt thanks to the Libby community for their support and understanding during these challenging times. The impact of the services provided and the connections formed over the years will continue to resonate within the community and beyond.
