Zilla Security's 2025 IGA Report Reveals Major Identity Governance Challenges Across Industries
Zilla Security's 2025 State of IGA Report: Major Findings on Identity Governance Challenges
Zilla Security, a leader in identity governance and administration (IGA), has recently published its 2025 State of IGA Report, shedding light on significant challenges that organizations face in managing identity governance. The report highlights the pressing need for modern solutions amidst growing compliance demands.
Key Insights from the Report
According to insights gathered from 300 leaders in identity management, a staggering 84% of organizations still rely on manual processes for managing user access reviews and provisioning. This reliance renders them highly vulnerable and inefficient in today’s fast-paced business environment where compliance is becoming increasingly stringent. The findings raise several alarm bells about the state of identity governance in numerous industries.
Manual Processes Dominate
The data reveals that only 6% of respondents have managed to fully automate their identity governance processes. The overwhelming reliance on manual methods not only hampers efficiency but also increases the risk of identity-related threats. A deep dive into this manual dependency reflects how organizations remain constrained by legacy systems that are outdated and unable to meet modern demands.
Integration Challenges
Integration appears to be a monumental hurdle, with 83% of leaders citing integration difficulties with legacy IGA systems as their top barrier to automation. These issues can result in unmanaged permissions, thereby exacerbating identity risks. Businesses must address these integration challenges to navigate the complexities of today's identity landscape effectively.
Compliance Complexity
Growing regulatory requirements are adding complexity to identity governance. The report indicates that 91% of organizations are grappling with an expanding scope of user access reviews prompted by rigorous compliance standards. Additionally, over half of these entities manage at least five compliance frameworks, placing a substantial strain on resources and complicating the governance processes even further.
Excessive Permissions Elevate Risks
A concerning finding from the report is that over 52% of organizations reported that more than 11% of user entitlements reviewed during audits were unnecessary, orphaned, or excessive. Such excessive permissions can open up significant security vulnerabilities and enhance the risk landscape that organizations face.
Provisioning Delays Compromise Productivity
Organizations are also struggling with provisioning delays, with only 10% able to provide new employee access within two days. Conversely, 29% take over 11 days, significantly delaying workforce enablement. These delays can stifle productivity and hinder the ability to respond to business needs swiftly.
The Need for Modern IGA Solutions
Reflecting on these findings, Deepak Taneja, CEO and co-founder of Zilla Security, emphasized that identity governance is now a strategic necessity. “These research findings highlight the urgent need for organizations to adopt modern, automated solutions to stay ahead of security risks and compliance demands while improving operational efficiency.”
Regional and Industry Disparities
The report also highlights disparities in automation adoption across different regions. For instance, about 32% of organizations in the UK have partially or fully automated their IGA processes, compared to only 13% in the United States. Highly regulated industries, such as healthcare and financial services, are particularly affected. Healthcare organizations are reported to be 56% more likely to struggle with access reviews due to their reliance on painstaking manual processes.
Moving Forward with Modern IGA
The 2025 State of IGA Report underscores the inadequacy of legacy IGA systems in addressing contemporary challenges. With 90% of organizations unable to effectively define and maintain roles for provisioning access, many find themselves caught in a cycle of high effort and low return.
