APsystems Secures a Key Milestone in Fire Safety with APstorage 261L
APsystems has reached a vital milestone in safety for its energy storage solutions designed for commercial and industrial applications, the APstorage 261L. Recently, this liquid-cooled energy storage system successfully passed the rigorous UL 9540A fire spread test, demonstrating a very high level of fire safety.
Significance of UL 9540A Testing
The UL 9540A standard is recognized globally as one of the strictest safety benchmarks for energy storage systems. It assesses various facets of thermal runaway phenomena at the cell, module, unit, and overall installation level. Key aspects measured during the testing include heat release rates, smoke emissions, temperature rise, and system reactions to potential fire and explosion hazards.
Outstanding Performance in Testing
During the UL 9540A testing of the APstorage 261L energy storage cabinet, extreme conditions were simulated while the system was at 100% state of charge (SOC) and with the fire suppression system purposely turned off. Remarkably, there were no short circuits, fire spread, or explosions, and the integrity of the cabinet remained unaffected throughout the test duration.
Some of the noteworthy test results include:
- - Heat Flux: At a maximum of 0 kW/m² near the tested cabinet, this result is significantly below the UL 9540A threshold of 1.3 kW/m², thereby eliminating the risk of ignition for adjacent devices due to thermal radiation.
- - Maximum Module Surface Temperature: 83.9°C on the tested module and surrounding modules, confirming effective thermal propagation containment among modules.
- - Adjacent Wall Temperature: The wall's maximum temperature was only 30.6°C, just 3.1°C above ambient temperature, indicating minimal thermal impact on the surroundings.
At every level of the testing protocol, including cell, module, and cabinet, thermal runaway was contained entirely within a single enclosure without affecting neighboring cabinets.
Designed with Safety in Mind
Safety has been a fundamental aspect of the APstorage 261L's design. The system employs a single-cluster liquid cooling architecture that maintains temperature differences between cells to under 3°C, not only prolonging battery life but also enhancing the operational safety of the system. The comprehensive safety architecture incorporates:
- - A four-level fire protection system.
- - Active ventilation.
- - Passive pressure relief mechanisms.
These features together create a multi-layered safety system that protects the solution from the cell level to the complete installation.
Compact and Versatile for European Applications
In addition to high safety standards, the APstorage 261L is designed for rapid and flexible deployments in European commercial and industrial settings. It occupies only 1.3 m² and comes with plug-and-play connectors, facilitating installation and startup. Its modular architecture allows seamless expansion of the installation with additional cabinets, making it ideal for industrial plants, retail service centers, and installations that integrate photovoltaics, energy storage, and vehicle charging.
With APsystems' extensive network across Europe and a dedicated warehouse in the Netherlands for commercial and industrial clients, APstorage ensures product availability, professional training, and reliable on-site technical support.
