Transforming Networking Technology for a Sustainable Energy Future

The 3rd International Digital Energy Expo (IDEE) officially commenced today in Shenzhen, China, bringing together industry leaders, representatives from organizations and research centers, experts, customers, and partners globally to discuss pivotal technological innovations. The expo aims to foster high-quality development in the digital energy sector by exploring cutting-edge industry trends, new applications, and best business practices.

The opening ceremony featured a keynote speech by Zhou Jianjun, Vice President of Huawei and President of Global Marketing, Sales, and Services at Huawei Digital Power. His address focused on "Networking Technology for All Scenarios Accelerating Wind and Solar as Primary Energy Sources." Jianjun emphasized that carbon neutrality is transitioning from a consensus to a practical commitment, highlighting challenges the electrical grid faces due to an increasing proportion of renewable energy sources and power electronics equipment. He elaborated on how Huawei is leveraging ongoing technological innovation to enhance networking capabilities across various scenarios to facilitate the construction of a stable new electrical system. This endeavor aims to accelerate the adoption of wind and solar energy as primary energy sources, marking a new era in networking formation.

Huawei has committed over a decade to advancing technologies that facilitate network formation. Transitioning from merely supporting network functions to innovative network formation keeps Huawei at the forefront of industry development. By integrating in-house developed core hardware that boasts high overload capacity and reliability, highly intelligent digital control devices, high-availability chain architectures, and smart formation algorithms, Huawei is enhancing its networking capabilities for power generation, transmission, distribution, and consumption. This holistic approach promotes the evolution from Energy Storage Systems (ESS) to a synergy of Photovoltaic systems (PV) and ESS.

These capabilities include short-circuit levels, virtual inertia support, wideband oscillation damping, primary frequency response, black start at a minimal level, and seamless transition on/off the grid. The applications of networking technologies are now widespread and have been commercially deployed on a global scale, setting benchmarks for green transition initiatives.

In the Middle East, on the shores of the Red Sea, Huawei's networking technologies have assisted in establishing the largest microgrid globally powered by 100% renewable energy. This microgrid has demonstrated reliable operation over two years, successfully withstand short circuits caused by adverse weather conditions, ensuring a dependable power supply. In Xizang, China, a 30 MW PV + 6 MW/24 MWh ESS project saw Huawei implement a network formation solution under extreme conditions, enhancing photovoltaic output from 1.5 MW to 12 MW, surpassing other industry solutions by integrating 75% more energy, substantially boosting project revenues. Furthermore, the largest integrated PV + ESS project, launched in the Philippines, is poised to close the energy gap with a combination of 3.5 GW PV systems and 4.5 GWh ESS forming the grid. Thanks to coordinated PV+ESS control and plant-level black start technologies, the project ensures consistent energy output for 13 hours daily.

Huawei aspires to lead innovation in digital and intelligent technologies within the sector, having created the first comprehensive synergy of 'device-edge-cloud' within the industry to enhance photovoltaic and energy storage management. This integration allows for intelligent management throughout the lifecycle of power plants, enabling less attended operations while maximizing revenue from energy trading. The profound integration of AI throughout every process from planning and construction to maintenance improves operational efficiency by enhancing the likelihood of success by reducing implementation and design errors by 40%, operational efficiency by 50%, and boosting operational revenue by over 10%. This framework assists customers in building safe, efficient, and intelligent renewable energy facilities, pushing the sector towards a new era of automation.

Huawei Digital Power emphasizes quality as fundamental to the industry's sustainability, striving for excellence across the board. With systematic capacities rooted in robust processes and an overarching quality strategy, Huawei adheres to the highest standards throughout a product's lifecycle, from demand definition and material management to production and delivery, continually generating value for its clients.

Moving forward, Huawei Digital Power intends to collaborate closely with industry authorities, power grid operators, sector associations, and standardization organizations to improve industry standards, optimize energy market mechanisms, and promote large-scale, standardized, and high-quality development in the industry, propelling wind and solar energy to the forefront as primary energy sources.
