Tau Motors Showcases Innovations in Electrification at Climate Week NYC 2026
During Climate Week NYC 2026, Tau Motors, Inc., a trailblazer in software-defined power conversion, illuminated its electrification strategies with substantial insights. The event highlighted the collaborative research from the Columbia Center of Advanced Electrification (CCAE) and Tau's own technical endeavors, encapsulated in 19 technical papers presented at the 2026 IEEE/CCAE Symposium on Advanced Electrification Systems.
In a fireside chat led by Wesley Pennington, the CEO and founder of Tau, the discussion revolved around the synergy of power electronics, electric machines, and embedded software aimed at accelerating electrification on a broader scale. The exploration into what is termed the "electro-industrial stack" underscored how crafting these components collaboratively optimizes overall system performance, reduces material dependencies, and expedites deployment across diverse sectors including transportation, industrial applications, and digital infrastructure.
The subjects of the presented research encompassed essential areas such as power conversion and control mechanisms, electric machine modeling, energy storage solutions, and grid-connected systems. Tau’s commitment to innovation is evident through its Ion™ and Gamma™ platforms, which underpin much of the presented research. The Ion™ platform blends modular power electronics with a robust suite of firmware and software libraries, catering to a variety of applications spanning from mobility and industrial machinery to energy infrastructure and data centers. Meanwhile, the Gamma™ platform focuses on integrating machine design with power electronics and controls, enabling operations without rare-earth materials.
Pennington articulated the imperative of advancing efficiency and affordability within the systems for converting and managing power, reflecting on the necessity to make technological advancements accessible and executable. He stated, “Accelerating electrification means making the systems that convert and control power more efficient, more affordable, and easier to deploy.” The overarching mission of Tau Motors is to furnish industries with enhanced control over performance, costs, and supply chains through their dedicated software-defined power platform, ultimately facilitating large-scale electrification efforts.
During the symposium, notable figures such as Matthias Preindl, an Associate Professor at Columbia University and Tau's Chief Scientist, presented along with representatives from GM Energy, Siemens, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. This gathering highlighted a robust interplay between academic advancements and their practical applications in various industries.
In collaboration with Columbia Engineering, Tau established the CCAE with the intent to merge advanced research with the practical needs of industrial applications. This initiative aims to address critical challenges impacting the efficiency and reliability of electric systems, thereby broadening the scope of potential use cases for these technologies.
As energy systems evolve, Tau Motors stands at the forefront of this transformation, committed to fostering advancements that champion both technological progress and sustainable practices. Their Ion™ and Gamma™ platforms represent a significant leap toward ensuring the adaptability and economic viability of electric systems across numerous fields.
