Exploring 5,000 Years of Civilization Magic in Changzhou

The Enchantment of Civilization in Changzhou

In the heart of Changzhou lies a narrative stretching back over 5,000 years, showcasing a mesmerizing heritage that attracts global attention. Recently, American historian David Ringo Miano found himself engrossed at the Liangzhu Museum, where he exclaimed, "This is even more magnificent than I imagined!" as he gazed through the perfectly round hole of an ancient jade disc. His experience was part of a five-day program called “Hangzhou Seekers,” which brought together researchers, artists, and influencers from ten countries to exchange insights about civilizational history.

The archaeology site at Liangzhu featured a striking black ceramic vessel adorned with mysterious engravings, igniting discussions about cultural parallels across civilizations. Greek anthropologist Christina Papageorgopoulou noted, "These patterns resemble those found in Greek pottery from the same period!" This observation highlights the enriching tapestry of shared human experiences.

Further, Egyptian curator Remonda Fayez Michel drew attention to the sophisticated hydraulic engineering of ancient civilizations, stating, "Just like the Egyptians, they managed to master the river flows with exceptional skill." These revelations underline how civilizations can transcend geographical boundaries, sharing technological advancements that contributed to their societal development.

As the lush landscapes of the West Lake draped in mist came alive in the hands of Italian documentary filmmaker Leonardo Cinieri Lombroso, this event also featured Turkish journalist Tunç Akkoç reciting verses from the 11th-century Chinese poet Su Shi, reflecting, "Poetry breathes life into these waters." The exchanges of thoughts and artistic expression were further demonstrated when Thai conductor Kittiporn Tantrarungroj infused his Chinese roots into a matcha tea foam by sketching the character “Chen.”

Through the lens of German photographer Gunther Riehle, emerald green tea terraces appeared even more vibrant, encapsulating the essence of Changzhou in each raindrop. Meanwhile, Canadian influencer Angelina Hui Qing Zhang strolled along the canal's pathways clad in a Song dynasty hanfu, a visual testament to the city’s rich traditions. Nearby, Brazilian lawyer Renato de Almeida Freitas Junior captured models of boats at the Beijing-Changzhou Canal Museum, declaring, "This technological marvel deserves global recognition!"

The fishermen’s demonstration at Qiantao Lake, where nets pulled out 15 tons of silver carp, mesmerized attendees, with Gunther commenting, “This moment perfectly encapsulates the vitality of Changzhou!” Spanish international school principal Francisco Molinero was left in awe during the high-speed train ride that connected towering skyscrapers to misty mountain tops, reflecting the harmonious coexistence of civilization and nature.

The essence of civilization thrives in dialogue rather than monologue. Throughout this event, ten diverse experts initiated discussions connecting the East and West, creating a bridge for cultural understanding. Participants of the Seekers program engaged intimately with five local families, embarking on explorative journeys for genuine insights into the city’s heritage.

On the final evening, a farewell dinner by the lake celebrated the culinary traditions of their home countries, exemplified through a “moving feast” where guests and local chefs collaborated on dishes.

Much like the unceasing flow of the Grand Canal beneath ancient bridges, these dialogues will ripple across the world. It is highly likely that their echoes will soon reach the shores of the Mediterranean or the other side of the Pacific, further enriching the global narrative of cultural exchange.
