Sinopec Achieves Historic Milestone with 5,300-Meter Vertical Well Depth

In a significant breakthrough for shale gas exploration, China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation, commonly known as Sinopec, has announced the successful drilling of the Tiebei 1HF well, reaching an impressive depth of 5,300 meters. This feat sets a new vertical depth record for shale gas wells in China, highlighting Sinopec's ongoing efforts to enhance natural gas production and reserves in the Sichuan and Chongqing regions.

The Tiebei 1HF well not only surpasses existing records, but it has also demonstrated a remarkable production rate of 314,500 cubic meters of industrial gas per day. This achievement is expected to greatly stimulate gas reserves and production efficiencies in the Puguang area. Puguang is renowned for being China's first large-scale gas field with deep, high-sulfur deposits, and Sinopec has a rich history of successful operations in the region spanning over two decades.

In pursuit of stable, long-term shale gas production, Sinopec has been actively seeking new resources and focusing on the Upper Permian formation in Puguang. However, exploring these resources poses significant challenges as they are located in an ultra-deep formation, buried at depths exceeding 4,500 meters, which is often considered a 'forbidden zone' due to rapid changes in stratum velocities. To address these challenges, Sinopec deployed extensive research and innovative technologies that resulted in a 100% drilling success rate for high-quality shale in the horizontal section, achieving precision comparable to 'threading a needle deep underground.'

To optimize extraction from this ultra-high-pressure environment, Sinopec developed a unique ultra-high-pressure (UHP) fracturing team capable of dynamic adaptations to drilling parameters on-site for different sections. They successfully crafted an artificial gas path in the high-pressure stratum at 5,300 meters, effectively tapping into and recovering resources from the most remote and extreme areas of the gas field to maximize development efficacy. Current preparations are underway by Sinopec’s Zhongyuan Oilfield for a comprehensive exploration and development plan focusing on Upper Permian shale gas in Puguang, aimed at promoting the efficient conversion of resources.

The exploration and development of shale gas hold significant strategic importance for China's energy outlook. Sinopec's commitment to this sector was underscored with their discovery of the Fuling shale gas field in 2012, which marked the beginning of commercial shale gas production in China, and ever since, the company has been vital in promoting high-quality development within this industry. By continually pushing the boundaries of technology in gas exploration, Sinopec not only strengthens its position in the energy sector but also contributes to China's broader energy security and sustainability initiatives.

This milestone not only cements Sinopec’s reputation in the energy industry but also positions China at the forefront of shale gas exploration globally.
