A recent study conducted by e-LIFEWORK has revealed some intriguing insights regarding the relationship between individuals and the English language. While many people report developing a fondness for English during their middle school years, remarkably, one in four individuals claim to have fallen in love with the language only after entering the workforce.
Background of the Study
The global demand for English learning has skyrocketed, driven by parents wishing to equip their children with English skills and adults aiming for personal growth and improved career opportunities. However, there has not been extensive research into the pivotal moments that inspire a love for English or how individuals currently apply their language skills. This is the gap that e-LIFEWORK aimed to fill with their recent survey involving men and women aged 20 to 50 who love the English language.

Amongst the various revelations, the survey concluded that:

Timing of Love for English: The survey highlighted that the most common time for individuals to fall in love with English was during their middle school years, with 32.1% of respondents indicating this. Yet, a significant 26% stated they developed their appreciation for the language after entering the professional world.

Catalysts for Interest: The primary reason people stated for developing a love for English was the enjoyment of foreign films, TV series, and music. This passion accounted for 23% of responses, followed closely by 18.3% who cited that English was their favorite subject in school.

Benefits of Loving English: Respondents expressed that the top three advantages of enjoying the language included the ability to appreciate entertainment from English-speaking countries (20.9%), the chance to connect with people globally (18%), and increased freedom during international travels (13.3%).

Usage of English Skills: The survey revealed that the majority of individuals currently utilize their English skills primarily for personal learning and self-improvement, alongside engaging with English-language entertainment.

Teaching Experiences: Interestingly, about 80% of those who love English have never taught the language professionally. Furthermore, over 40% expressed interest in pursuing a career as an English coach.
Survey Overview
The survey was conducted between the 16th and 18th of December 2025 using online methods. It involved a diverse group of 339 English-loving individuals. This collaborative effort was provided by RC Research Data.
