AI Trust Map Reveals Shocking Rankings for America's Biggest Brands

AI Trust Map Unveils Surprising Rankings of Major U.S. Brands

In a groundbreaking study by 5W AI Communications, the inaugural 5W AI Trust Map of America has brought to light how artificial intelligence (AI) engines evaluate the standing of prominent brands in the United States. Conducting the first national examination of brand rankings reflected in AI responses across key consumer sectors, the results challenge conventional beliefs about major retail and service chains.

Key Findings at a Glance

Across five consumer categories—Grocery, Restaurants, Banking, Hotels, and Healthcare—only seven out of 250 state-level inquiries defined major national chains as dominant in their respective categories. Instead, local favorites and regional enterprises seem to have garnered stronger trust and recognition among consumers who rely on AI platforms for product recommendations or local service inquiries.

For instance, in the grocery segment, Walmart, a retail behemoth covering 49 states, is recognized as the leading choice in only two states, a stark comparison to Costco's twelve states and Wegmans' five states including New York and Pennsylvania.

When exploring the restaurant scene, McDonald's, a staple in fast food across the nation, is similarly ranked as the favored option in just two states. In contrast, regional players like In-N-Out Burger and Culver's establish dominance in six states each, bringing to attention the competitive prowess of local chains over national brands.

In the banking sector, Chase Bank, which operates in 48 states, has made the AI dominant rankings only in three states, overshadowed primarily by BECU's prominence in Washington and Frost Bank’s clout in Texas.

The hotel industry paints an even bleaker picture for Marriott, which boasts over 8,500 properties nationwide; it was not recognized as a leading choice in any state, while 50 various local hotels received the title in individual states. Locations such as The Plaza in New York and The Greenbrier in West Virginia exemplify the localized preference over a commonly known chain.

The Healthcare Landscape

Healthcare insights reveal a similar trend, where HCA operates across various states yet is not noted as dominant by AI engines. Academic medical centers such as Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, and Johns Hopkins in Maryland received the top rankings. It’s evident that institutional reputation and trustworthiness play a crucial role in healthcare AI responses.

Shifting Dynamics in Consumer Research

More than a third of consumers now begin their product searches using AI instead of traditional search engines like Google, reflecting a significant shift in consumer behavior. The study’s findings suggest that AI prioritize local media presence, community conversations, and press coverage over grand marketing campaigns and sheer store numbers.

“Five categories, same finding. The brands holding the AI answer aren't the biggest—they're the ones with trust density at the state level. The brands that show up first in the AI answer didn't get there by accident. They were built into it on purpose,” stated Ronn Torossian, Founder and Chairman of 5W AI Communications.

Volume 1 of the study, focusing on the grocery sector, is already available, while insights across other categories like Restaurants, Banking, Hotels, and Healthcare are set for release through October 2026. The organization also plans to expand the research into other sectors like coffee, pharmacies, and airlines, promising quarterly updates to capture these evolving dynamics.

Conclusion

The 5W AI Trust Map serves as a critical reminder of the importance of local brand loyalty and trust in the age of artificial intelligence. As consumers increasingly rely on AI for their decision-making, it is essential for brands to consider their presence and reputation within their communities to succeed.
