Huawei DigiTruck Project Celebrates 290 Graduates in Kenya
On March 17, 2025, the Huawei DigiTruck team celebrated the successful graduation of 290 young individuals in Homa Bay, Kenya. This event marked a significant milestone for the DigiTruck initiative, which took place under the TECH4ALL framework, aimed at enhancing digital literacy and empowering youth.
During the six-week training program, students were educated in essential digital skills needed in today’s rapidly changing environment. The training encompassed a broad range of topics, including computer skills, digital marketing, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and cybersecurity, which are indispensable for success in various fields.
Dr. Raymond Omollo, the Secretary of the Kenyan Ministry of Interior, emphasized the necessity of digital skills in modern society: “Digital skills are no longer a luxury; they are essential. Whether you’re starting an online business, working from home, or utilizing technologies, digital literacy opens up new opportunities.”
The DigiTruck, a solar-powered mobile classroom mounted on a truck, provided education in remote areas, equipped with workstations, internet access, and digital tools. Since its inception in Kenya in 2019, the DigiTruck initiative has trained over 6,030 youth across 36 counties, focusing primarily on job-seeking youth, especially girls and women. Notably, in 2024, 906 of the 1,648 participants were women, showcasing a commitment to gender equality in tech education.
Adam Lane, Director of Government Affairs and Policy at Huawei, noted, “In addition to our partnerships with over 60 universities and vocational institutions, we aim to reach youth outside the formal education system and in rural areas with DigiTruck. I am proud of achieving a balanced gender ratio among participants as digital skills are truly necessary for everyone in today’s economy.”
The DigiTruck project represents a partnership among Huawei, the Kenyan ICT Authority, the Ministry of Youth Affairs, the National Youth Council, Safaricom, Computers for Schools Kenya, and many local organizations. It aligns with the Kenyan government’s national agenda for economic transformation and digital inclusion, addressing the urgent need to bridge the digital divide.
As part of the training course in Homa Bay, participants engaged in an innovation competition that encouraged them to develop practical solutions to local challenges. Winning teams created digital solutions aimed at enhancing health services, improving conditions for local quarry workers, and increasing awareness of online and cybersecurity.
Anticipations suggest that graduates will spur growth in ICT enrollments, invigorate digital entrepreneurship, and heighten digital acceptance in rural communities. The DigiTruck initiative is a component of the Skills on Wheels programs in the TECH4ALL campaign, which has reached over 110,000 individuals in 20 countries, promoting digital skills and cybersecurity awareness while traversing over 50,000 kilometers worldwide.
