Fabula Inc.'s Groundbreaking Initiative in Malmö
Fabula Inc., a startup based in Tokyo, has embarked on an ambitious environmental project called the "King Salmon Project." Under this initiative, the company has sourced coffee grounds in Malmö, Sweden, to curate a local resource recycling program. Driven by their vision of "creating excitement from waste," Fabula aims to enhance the value of unused resources, marrying their unique technology with local efforts.
Background of the Project
With a history of collaborating with municipalities and businesses globally, Fabula has focused on transforming resources like coffee grounds and cacao husks into viable materials. Malmö, known for its dedication to waste reduction and resource circulation, serves as an ideal location for Fabula’s latest undertaking. The project exemplifies a city-wide circular model by reintegrating street-sourced resources back into the community.
Implementation Details
The project consists of three phases: resource collection, material processing and product development, and demonstrative exhibitions.
Resource Collection
In Malmö, eight cafes participated in gathering approximately 200 kg of used coffee grounds. After collection, the grounds underwent a drying process at local facilities to prepare them for material reformation. This step was crucial in establishing a mechanism that encourages local resource recycling.
Material Processing and Product Development
Utilizing its proprietary technology, Fabula restructured the dried coffee grounds into a new material. This innovation led to the design and production of new products: a drip stand and a menu pop stand. The previously discarded coffee grounds were reborn as functional items for cafes and food courts, showcasing the potential of a sustainable cycle.
Demonstration and Exhibition
To validate their creations, Fabula installed the menu pop stand in a food court in Malmö for two days, conducting interviews to gather feedback. The company also hosted an event where attendees sampled coffee brewed using their drip stand. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with visitors rating the product’s value enhancement at 4.63 out of 5 and the likelihood of repurchase at 4.75 out of 5. These results reaffirmed the project’s ability to convert food waste into valuable experiences and economic opportunities.
Thanks to this project, Fabula garnered attention from Swedish businesses and adjacent countries, initiating discussions for potential future collaborations.
Future Developments
The King Salmon Project demonstrated the feasibility of a "local production and consumption of waste" model by reusing coffee grounds in the community. The initiative served as a stepping stone to enhance consumer experiences and bolster the local economy.
Moving forward, Fabula plans to leverage the insights gained from this project to strengthen collaborations with local governments and organizations back in Japan. The company aims to support the adoption of circular products in restaurants and commercial facilities while establishing resource collection schemes within the community. Building on this model, Fabula seeks to explore business opportunities abroad, beginning with its experience in Malmö.
Through these initiatives, Fabula is dedicated to addressing social issues by realizing the value of various unused resources, particularly food waste. The company invites partnerships with local governments, enterprises, and community organizations committed to fostering a sustainable future through storytelling via their innovative recycling efforts.
